Or maybe they are just going with the match that would get them better ratings.

Plus Athletic have been one of the best teams to watch this season in Spain, so it'll probably be a set of more entertaining games too.

Not at all.

If Manchester United on Channel 5 in an early evening slot can beat Manchester City on ITV 1, they'd be utter loons to show any other games.

It's the viewing public that have an overall bias.

Liverpool have qualified for the 3rd qualifying round of this competiton. However they may still enter in a later stage, or get into the champions league.

08/03 18:00 ITV4 Sporting v Man City
08/03 18:00 ESPN Twente v Schalke

08/03 20:05 FIVE Man Utd v Bilbao
08/03 20:05 ITV4 Alkmaar v Udinese
08/03 20:05 ESPN Valencia v Eindhoven

The Dutch Eredivisie must be proud that all three of their clubs get to be shown on British TV.

And which Channel has the Dutch League and is shamefully self promoting it ???

ESPN has the Bundesliga as well, so Twente v Schalke was the logical option. And Valencia v Eindhoven was a safe bet anyway, with Standard v Hannover being the only alternative.

UEFA have Changed the Rules this year for the FA Cup
Winner.

They will go directly into the Group Stage rather than play
a 4th qualifying Round

I do not know if this Rule applies if the side has not WON the Cup (I mean loses in the Final to a Champions League qualifier, like Stoke did)

Isn't it normally the case that if the FA Cup winner is already in the Champions League, the league places "bump up", and the runner-up joins at the bottom -- so the team finishing 5th gets the FA Cup place, the League Cup winner gets the 5th place place and the FA Cup runner-up gets the League Cup place?

If that all makes sense...

No, it doesn't. In that case, the 5th placed PL club would go through to the EL group stage. The domestic "cup loser" always gets the lowest available EL berth. That's why Stoke had to start one round earlier than Spurs and Birmingham.

Amazing that all five fixtures are the same !!!

What is wrong with the Other 3 ties ??

And dont suggest the results because Bilbao are 32 up with a home leg and they are still
showing that one !!!!

And the simple answer is, even though a recovery by Man United looks unlikely, it will still bring in more viewers than any of the other games available.

Should United go out next week which looks very likely now, then assuming they are still in C5 will follow City from the Quarter Finals onwards instead. City should bounce back at home, having only conceded one goal away.

Here's the official copy from Channel 5 about their Quarter Final coverage on March 29th:

Quote:
“Live coverage of the first leg of one of the Quarter Finals of this year’s Europa League, featuring, assuming they progressed to this stage, either Manchester United or Manchester City. Presented by Jim Rosenthal, who is joined by Stan Collymore and Pat Nevin. Commentary by Dave Woods and Graham Taylor.

A goal from on-loan Brazilian defender Xandao gave Sporting Lisbon a 1-0 victory in a closely fought first leg tie against Manchester City in their Round of 16 match against the Lions. Did the wealth of attacking riches at the disposal of manager Roberto Mancini book the Blues a place in the Quarter Finals when the Portuguese club visited the City of Manchester Stadium?

Meanwhile, cross-town rivals Manchester United faced an even more trying task after Athletic Bilbao’s shock 3-2 victory at Old Trafford in the first leg of their Round of 16 game. Despite England striker Wayne Rooney converting a late penalty to give the Red Devils a chance, they will have had their work cut out against the Spanish side who boast in-form striker and national team lynchpin Fernando Llorente in their forward line in the second leg. Did they do enough to progress?

If either or both of the Manchester teams make it through to the Quarter Finals of this competition, the pick of action will be on Channel 5.

I'm curious about the order of picks...

#1 Bilbao v Man Utd (goes without saying)
#2 Man City v Sporting (ditto)
#3 Schalke v Twente? (has the McClaren factor going for it, plus a decent German team)
#4 Eindhoven v Valencia? (renowned Spanish team)
#5 Udinese v Alkmaar (at least better than Hannover v Standard which would have been the only other option in that slot)

PSV v Valencia ahead of Schalke v Twente.

The first leg of Standard v Hannover was a really good game - but neither team is really a big draw - and there's a reasonable chance of it going to extra time too.

I see Valencia were 4-0 up

If PSV hadn't got 2 late goals ITV would have had to pick Liege

They were all at 20:05 in 2009-10 and 2010-11, except for Spartak Moscow's home leg last season.

It was an odd thing for a former England manager to say that.

I really like Dave Woods, but Graham Taylor does grate sometimes as the summariser.

Manchester United are now out, and therefore Manchester City are now the only British side left in the competition.

If Manchester Cuty go through channel 5 will have them as 1st pick for the rest of the competition as long as they remain in it.

If Manchester City go out, in terms of ratings there really won't be much interest left in the competition in the UK.

It is now When City go out as with 4 goals needed the English premier league has really bombed in Europe this season.

All that promise when the two Manchester clubs dropped down into the competition has fizzled into nothing.

The UK broadcasters are in the exact same position as they were last year with no British clubs in the mix from the QFs onwards.
