Surely STV/BBC Scotland could purchase a 1st pick package for the Scottish broadcast territory? I bet RTE gets 1st pick of matches for its territory.
If your interpretation of the rules is correct, we could end up in a situation where Celtic matches are broadcast live and free to view for viewers in Ireland but are not available to viewers in Scotland ![]() |

The fixtures also illustrate why the rights aren't worth much.
Everyone plays 3 games at 6pm and 3 games at 8.05pm. So half the matches aren't even fully in prime-time. But a good chance Five will try and pick up Setanta's rights for a nominal fee so they can have doubleheaders. Lets take Group C when Celtic play Hamburg in matchday 3 & 4, on matchday 3 there is Fulham v Roma, & on matchday 4, Everton v Benfica with 8.05 pm ko's which FIVE could well pick. Also I can see British Eurosport could be intrested in the 3rd & 4th picks. |

Unless someone else buys the rights which were held by Setanta.

On another thread this has been dicussed as 2nd picks may have to be 'saved' contractually for the semi-finals. Hence as Setanta (from memory) had 2 semi final games (2 on Five) if no-one buys Setanta's package then ITV may not be able to show it.
Imagine if the semi line up was Roma V Everton and Benfica V Fulham with only one game shown live ![]() Quote:
Thanks for the info. After the recent Champions League disappointment, it looks like us Celtic fans are going to miss out here as well

RTE didn't win the rights for the Europa League, Setanta Ireland did i'm not clear on what picks they have or if they lost some rights due to Setanta UK going bust. Sorry TV3 also have rights in Ireland.

Well whatever happensd both second legs and one first leg would be shown.
I think they may not be able to. Thanks mlt11 and airisuk for clarifying the semi-final line ups. Why wouldn't FIVE be able to bid for Setanta's rights? |

That's a slightly confusing article as it refers to a "joint deal with Channel Five".However reading the article it appears that ESPN has bought all the rights previously held by Setanta. |

It's wrong..it's the previously described three way deal with five and itv...espn and itv split the pics after five's first pic
Now you can all guess what games everyone has picked. |

To add to this, for MD1, ESPN gets second and fourth picks, while ITV gets third and fifth. That swaps for MD2.

Now you can all guess what games everyone has picked. Whoever has 2nd pick has a choice of Fulham or Celtic - ie one of the least attractive PL teams for TV or a team of almost no interest to 90% of the UK. I guess Fulham will normally be preferred. Also is it worth ITV4 bothering to show 4th / 5th picks? Will they get more than "normal" ITV4 programming bearing in mind they'll be up against Everton on Five? Though I guess it will be a contractual commitment so they'll have to. |

Also, do we get a min/max of five live group games each matchday (with three of those games involving the three British teams)? And, how are the knock-out stage matches divided to the UK broadcasters? I think I remember all three broadcasters were able to show highlights when the Setanta deal was struck? |

Based on kick off-times and such like, my guesses for MD1 are:
1st - Everton v AEK Athens - Five 2nd - CSKA Sofia v Fulham - ESPN 3rd - Hapoel Tel-Aviv v Celtic - ITV4/STV 4th and 5th...well, take your pick of 9.05pm (CET) games... http://www.uefa.com/Competitions/UEF...lts/index.html |

...you haven't really guessed there have you?
It's certainly not a given that ESPN will take Fulham over Celtic, because they might have a strategy that sees them, with the loss of 23 EPL games from next season, want to keep Scottish viewers sweet. I would also argue that Celtic are a slightly bigger club than Fulham. |
