Yes, English teams usually get their own way, i.e. home matches at 8.05 pm.

I enquired about that when I took my package and they said it wasn't included. Admittedly I don't think I've ever tested it...

Yes it is included, as I've watched it. In fact it's included in the basic package and its only ESPN and ESPN America that you pay for.
Just another thing it's happened on a few occasions when there have been two live UK Sports events schedualled at the same time which ESPN had the rights too and they Used ESPN Classic to cover one of the events. But of course that wasn't broadcast in HD.

It's not in the basic package, it's in Entertainment Extra. I think when I signed up for ESPN it only had the ESPN and ESPN America logos, hence my assumption that ESPN Classic required Entertainment Extra (like Eurosport).

EDIT: Nope, I can't get ESPN Classic. It's not included in the ESPN package. Thus, it would be pretty annoying for live sport to be shown on it.

ESPN's website backs this up also:

Quote:
“If you are already a Sky customer or are thinking about joining Sky you can add the ESPN and ESPN HD channels to your Sky subscription.
Your ESPN subscription will also include ESPN America and ESPN America HD, bringing you the best live North American sports action 24 hours a day. Sky customers with the ‘Entertainment Extra’ channel pack also receive ESPN Classic.”

That's what I mean its not a premium channel like Sky Sports or ESPN and ESPN America.

That's not what you said at all:

I think it's ridiculous that it isn't included in both Entertainment Extra and the ESPN pack.

Is it really a cast-iron guarantee that Steaua v Chelsea will be selected over Anji v Newcastle United as ITV's second pick?

I think Anji are a bigger draw than Steaua (Anji have Eto'o, Diarra and Zhirkov in their team - how many current Steaua players can you name?), so are Chelsea really that much of a bigger draw than Newcastle? I'm sure someone will be able to clarify with regards comparable television ratings of their respective games. Fair enough if Chelsea rate considerably better and that is why you have reached that conclusion.

The other benefit of going with Anji v Newcastle would be, as Karl mentions, the 5pm kick-off time, which would provide ITV with a longer build-up to the Tottenham game. A less important thing I know and not one that would likely contribute to this decision but something that I dare say ITV welcome in the instances when they've had 5pm matches as part of their Europa League double headers.

From where I'm sitting, Chelsea will replace Liverpool as ITVs bet and Newcastle will remain on ESPN for as long as we are in the competition.

ITVs coverage of Liverpool was pretty vomit inducing mind. You'd think they'd gone through the way the analysis went on at the end. And the bias during the game itself was insane. Not many other clubs get that kind of bias through commentary.

The way they fawn over Suarez - how easily racist abuse is forgotten eh?

Not quite, Newcastle will probably move to ITV should any of the other two clubs go out this round.

They might reluctantly put us on the ITV player should we make the final!

Not Confirmed but logic suggests the following kick offs

Unfortunately for ESPN they wont have a good choice for 805 match as Stuttgart v Lazio is the standout "other" game ??

Thurs 7th
6 pm (5pm Russian games)
Steuea v Chelsea
Anzhi v Newcastle
Stuttgart v Lazio (So Italian TV do not clash with Inter match)
Plzen v Fenerbahce

805pm
Tottenham v Inter Milan (on Itv main channel)
Benfica v Bordeaux (Same time zone as us so gets 805 games)
Basel v Zenit (so return leg is earlyko)
Levante v Rubin Kazan

But it is not a double header any more

the second match is on ITV and the first on ITV4

The second leg could be Newcastle but they will wait until the first legs are played to decide

That's got nothing to do with anything. If a player is having a stormer, they're going to say as much, regardless of how often they go on about it. Just because he was banned for racist abuse doesn't mean he's a poor player, had a poor game, doesn't deserve so much/any praise. Absolutely NO reason for the ban he received to have ANY effect on the way people talk about him when he's on the pitch.

Well it is still a double header, they will probably stay on air on ITV4 until 7.45 and then move over to ITV(1).

I did see him stamp on a players back last night which Townsend said there was no need and he does let himself down sometimes

So they were not beyond criticising Liverpool

I think by that point they were both passing powdered milk such was the amount of "self abuse" going on throughout the commentary.

I dread to think what a last minute goal would have done to them, they would have most likely ripped off their "members"!

It's unusual that both legs of Benfica v Bordeaux are in the late slot; this could be an error.

Interesting that they haven't confirmed the early match as well.

I would imagine ITV will simply pick the most attractive looking second leg out of Chelsea and Newcastle after the first legs are finished. As a neutral I would rather watch Newcastle v Anzhi if the tie is still in the balance after the first leg but I understand that Chelsea are maybe a bigger 'draw' in terms of ratings.

The issue here for me though is that alot of people may not be too enticed about Chelsea playing in the Europa League given their CL pedigree, whereas Newcastle are in Europe for the first time in a while and I would reckon the atmosphere at SJP and quality of opponent in Anzhi might actually attract a bigger audience than Chelsea playing Steaua in a comp most people might think they don't want to be in.

But ITV still have to pick the first leg as well??

Why don't they have the early Europa League kickoffs in the 2nd leg at 5pm (even those not in Russia) to allow time for extra time and penalties if necessary?

Because that is a ridiculous time for people to get to games. 6pm CET is a time when alot of people are only just finishing work or travelling. TV ratings and attendance figures would be massively affected if games kicked off at that time. Even 7pm CET is too early IMO but at least it gives people time to get to the game without having to book the afternoon off and gives people time to get home and watch on TV.
