That's the problem with centralised marketing and simultaneous kick-off times across Europe: In England, 18:00 GMT is too early. In Ukraine or Romania, 22:05 local time is too late. In Germany, where 20:30 CET is the traditional evening kick-off, both slots don't really work.

What I don't understand is why they have to play the same weeks as the Champions League. If the Europa League was played in different weeks then games could be played over two nights and all kick off at a sensible time e.g 19:45 GMT.

There's not enough midweeks for that to be possible.

The issue here for me though is that alot of people may not be too enticed about Chelsea playing in the Europa League given their CL pedigree, whereas Newcastle are in Europe for the first time in a while and I would reckon the atmosphere at SJP and quality of opponent in Anzhi might actually attract a bigger audience than Chelsea playing Steaua in a comp most people might think they don't want to be in.”

Chelsea will still get a higher audience, a lot of people will be interested in how Chelsea do in the Europa League given their CL pedigree.

Then maybe the Europa League should start a few weeks earlier than the Champions League, that would sort it out.

They need to get rid of the Champions League Drop Outs from qualifying in August AND then again from Group Stages

Then you can have a Last 16 rather than Last 32 and Play it in weeks 2 and 4 with the Champions League in weeks 1 and 3 over this Four week period ??

Yeah it's shocking, they didn't have a single group game on ITV, it was all Liverpool and Tottenham.

or maybe if spurs vs inter is a draw or a 1-0 either way could they put that on itv at 6pm? because it would get the ratings....

I agree with that. In a way it's a bit like the FA Cup in terms of prize money, ie I think if you lose in the semi's you get a load of money, but certainly if you lose in the final you do. It's like you're being rewarded for failure. For me, if you lose in the CL qualifiers, that's it, your European campaign is over, same with if you don't qualify from the CL group stage, why should you be rewarded with another chance to win a trophy (I'd also not call it the CL as it's clearly anything but just Champions taking part).

Fa Cup : Sucess to reach Semis now
European Cup : Success to reach Group Stage
Premier League : Success to come 4th

Sums up modern football

Apart from Newcastle v Atromitos in the Europa League, and Brighton v Newcastle in the FA Cup.

So actually the third Newcastle game on ITV this season.

Well the Europa League Qualifying round counts then...

You're constant tirades on ITV picks are pretty tiresome.

It was a playoff game, not a qualifier.

Absolutely gobsmacked that ITV have finally picked Newcastle for a change, about bloody time.

When the Champions League moved to the current format pre-Christmas, minus the second group stage, they did play some of the opening rounds of the Europa League in non-Champions League weeks. But if that were the case all the time then it would be virtually impossible to arrange domestic fixtures in midweek. If there was a League Cup tie between a team in the Champions League and a team in the Europa League, when would you be able to play that?

Stupid, as what would have happened if only Newcastle was left in the tournament. Newcastle have a big following across the North East and Cumbria and supporters scattered around the country. However, I can't receive ITV4 and it looks like I'll catch the end in the pub.
Normally I don't follow the game much now, but as I'm from this part of the country and Newcastle never seem to win any trophies, this could be worth watching.

If Ajax had gone through instead of Steau Bucharest there's no chance ITV would've picked Newcastle.

They have made the right decision picking them here though. Much more attractive tie.

That is exactly the point we have been complaining about

The TV Companies should look at the attractiveness of the tie as a contest rather than just
the one club

So we know BT Sports are taking over the Europa League rights from ESPN from next season.

After Swansea won the league cup, we also know that Swansea are in the Europa League next season.
