It wasn't really shocking. I doubt I would have chosen any of the Newcastle games rather than Tottenham or Liverpool.

The point though is that someone suggested the Europa League starts a few weeks earlier so that the Champions League and Europa League can have seperate midweeks.

This isn't possible. The Europa League matchdays 5 and 6, being on different midweeks to the champions league matchdays 5 and 6 was scrapped to ease fixture congestion.

As for the last 16 ties Steaua București are former European Cup champions I would have thought they were more well known and therefore a more attractive tie with them playing Chelsea, rather than some other billionairres team playing Newcastle.

It would have made interesting TV if UEFA had let Anzhi play at home (aside the warzone bit)

Newcastle aren't taking any allocation of away tickets because the Russian Embassy can't get them visa's in time and Anzhi won't have any fans as Luzhniki Stadium is 1,000 miles from home...in context of distance that's like telling Newcastle there next game will be played in Riga.

Wonder if ITV will send a team or do it off tube

ITV sent a team to Moscow for Anji's game against Liverpool, and will do the same for this one.

Plus like earlier in the season utilising the commentator (who I assume will be Drury) to do pre/post match interviews too like earlier in the season.

Here is the complete list of who gets into the Europa League

http://kassiesa.home.xs4all.nl/bert/...ccess2013.html

162 get in !!!!

And then they let another 25 from CL Qualies

And then they let another 8 from CL Group

Simpler Solution

Get rid of the 33 mentioned above

Still play 4 Qualifying rounds but make it 8 Groups of 4

Then you have a Last 16 and not 32 !!!

You can't get rid of those. The top 6 nations eat up all the CL slots with their 3rd & 4th placed teams, at the expense of smaller countries. Their champions should at least be entitled to play the Europa League. Otherwise you'd often have the bizarre phenomenon that Croatia's or Switzerland's 3rd placed team reaches the group stage while the champion does not.

Used to ESPN you see whose coverage has been atrocious. They've been obsessed with the other teams as opposed to the actual game they are covering

Benfica v Bordeaux is ESPN's second match next Thursday.

Will ITV stick with Newcastle?

Parked the bus tonight with a weakened side but all to play for next week

No it doesn't, that kicks off at 6pm next week (live on ITV 4). ITV have to choose between the Newcastle and Chelsea games to show on ITV at 8:05pm.

No great shock, with the current European champions at risk of going out of their 2nd European competition of the season. That plus them surely getting higher ratings than Newcastle means it was an obvious choice given the respective scorelines last night.

Wouldn't it make sense for UEFA to schedule Europa League games at 5pm and 8pm just in case the earlier games go to extra time and penalties?

Hadn't thought about that. Sensible idea if I'm honest (surprised they haven't thought of that themselves). Certainly makes sense for the 2nd legs of games.

Very true, I still expect some Newcastle fans to come on here crying though at some point.

I think that ITV have made a very good decision based on the first leg results

To be fair, I think had Chelsea won 2-0 or 3-0, they may have gone for Newcastle (or at least more likely to than in the current situation), but as I said, with Chelsea losing (and not scoring an away goal) as well as being the reigning European Champions, it's a complete no brainer. Even the most ardent Newcastle fan couldn't (or certainly shouldn't, if they think logically, rationally and sensibly) argue with the choice.

And that is how as a fan I want the choices to be made

It isnt a gripe against ITV or ESPN it is just that sometimes the choices are not made fairly.

It is the Same with Sky

Football kicking-off at 6pm on a weekday is bad enough. There's no need to start it an hour earlier.
