Look like Itv are saving the advert breaks for the football, no adverts during the strategic break in the 2nd innings of the cricket.

Basel v Spurs (ITV/ITV 4 - 8:05pm)
Newcastle v Benfica (ITV/ITV 4 - 8:05pm)
Lazio v Fenerbahce (ESPN - 8:05pm)”

Would be extremely surprised if by choice ITV went for two matches head to head. IPL most likely relegated to online.

What happens if tonights first leg results are: Benfica 7 Newcastle 0, Chelsea 2 Rubin Kazan 1.

I would expect ITV to then pick Chelsea over Newcastle.

Strange. Why would a UK broadcaster give priority to a foreign domestic cricket competition, over one of the most popular clubs in England playing in a QF of a European competition? I don't think if it came down to it they would.

But if they pick both 8:05 ties, then they get to show both events, instead of having Europa League at 5pm and IPL online, leaving nothing on ITV 4 before or after the match. This is a weaker schedule and the all day share will be less. Having IPL, followed by Europa League creates a stronger schedule for that day on ITV 4.

Which schedule is better:

3pm - IPL
7:30pm - Europa League

Or:

Before 4:30pm - Police, Camera, Action and other filler
4:30pm - Europa League
7:45pm - filler

3 hours of live sport (which rates higher than usual programming) or 7 hours. It seems like a no brainer to me.

Still believe Newcastle should have been on ITV1. Cracking game so far

Meanwhile Spurs are imploding on ITV.

ITV looking like they could have 2 decent ties next week with Newcastle doing well so far..and Spurs looking like they might need to make a Middlesborough type comeback.

Is ITV using channel 5 graphics?

No, they are the Europa League graphics which all broadcasters use.

don't see how you can use the phrase "no brainer". putting the two europa league ties up against each other cannibalises the audience. There's a reason why ITV have at no stage up until now shown two games at the same time.

Yes, the IPL hadn't started yet, and the 2 ratings draws (Liverpool and Spurs) have always played at different times. It's about creating a more complete schedule. Why relegate hours of cricket to online when you can show both that and the football seperately, gaining higher ratings. It may split the ratings, but it makes sense as they are doing the same this week. If ITV were that concerned about clashes then they wouldn't have bought the rights to 1st and 2nd picks, knowing that games clash at this stage of the competition.

Drury...hells teeth man.

But saying tonights matches clash is ridiculous. All 4 matches kicked off at the same time.

Anyway second legs:

Newcastle (1) v (3) Benfica
FC Basel (2) v (2) Tottenham
Rubin Kazan (1) v (3) Chelsea

Obviously from that lot Tottenham will be 1st choice.

2nd and 3rd choices, the games are not completely over, but you would expect Newcastle to go out, and Chelsea to go through. Wonder if that will have any bearing on the decision of which tie to broadcast.

With Bale out Tottenham's chances are rather slim. Newcastle might have a better chance to be honest - a 2-0 win at home is doable.

I don't really understand the debate. The schedules already confirm the selections I posted on the previous page and taking into account the 1st leg results I don't see that changing.

Rubin v Chelsea (5pm - ESPN)
Lazio v Fenerbahce (8:05pm - ESPN)
Spurs v Basel (8:05pm - ITV)
Newcastle v Benfica (8:05pm - ITV 4)

I don't think they will change, but to say the schedules have clashed tonight is a bit misleading, as ITV were forced to choose matches that clashed tonight.

Advantage of Chelsea being on ESPN is that they will show the Lazio-Fenerbahce game too.

My point was that they knew this when they bought the rights, so it isn't that horrifying a thought for ITV. They showed CL matches at the same time a few years ago too. By not showing the 5pm tie they can maximise their live sport on ITV 4 by showing IPL followed by Europa League, give viewers a choice of 8:05pm match, and show (imo) the two best ties. In this situation, it just seems like the most sensible option to me.

ITV are just making me will Spurs to get knocked out, the camera angle they use for these Europa games is unwatchable.
And before anyone bangs there 'it's Uefa's fault' drum, it is the ITV technical director who decides the angle.

If so why did Sky have that angle when Spurs had their season in the UCL too?

Perhaps because Sky agree it is a better angle? Sky actually paid to have the lower gantry built.
