Have I missed something? How could STV show games?

By virtue of ITV's contract.

UEFA sees ITV4 as STV's "2nd channel", which is why a couple of seasons back they had to simulcast coverage of a Chelsea game instead of (I think) Liverpool v Real Madrid. This was due to Celtic having already played AC Milan on that matchday, but a week earlier due to the latter's involvement in the Club World Cup.

So I don't think there would be anything to stop STV showing games already being shown on ITV4.

I've a feeling that's not how it will work with the Europa League. The deal is specifically with ITV4, rather than with ITV. I would think ITV might quite like to put a Celtic game on against STV's new Thursday night opt out.

UEFA can't consider ITV4 to be an "alternative" STV channel on on occasion, but not on another.

So I don't think there's anything ITV could do to stop STV showing a Celtic game that may find itself on ITV4.

... ITV's first four live games are Liverpool v Debrecen, Man United v Wolfsburg, Chelsea v Atletico Madrid and Lyon v Liverpool. Sky will show the other fixtures from the first four matchdays.

so itv have chosen not to show arsenal in there first 4 live games. the team that probably play the most attractive football out off the 4. Think i will have to watch sky then as i support none off the teams and have the radio on for the other english game on wednesday nights

Also, on Wednesdays, Sky Sports Xtra is simulcasting with Sky Sports HD3, but none of Rangers' Tuesday games will be in HD, unless they do decide to show them on Sky1/HD.

Sky have all picks on Tuesday.

ITV have first pick on Wednesday; Sky have the rest.

EDIT: just realised this is a thread about the Europa League (the post about the CL threw me).

So for the EL, Five get the first pick each matchday.

17/09 18:00 ITV4 CSKA Sofia v Fulham (confirmed)
17/09 18:00 ESPN Hapoel v Celtic (logical conclusion)
17/09 20:05 FIVE Everton v AEK Athens (confirmed)
17/09 20:05 ITV4 Athletic Bilbao v Austria Vienna (confirmed)
17/09 20:05 ESPN ??? v ??? (probably Fenerbahce v Twente?)

I can't really figure what ITV finds so special about Bilbao v Austria. Just the fact that it's a Spanish team against a team from the same city as the club that kicked out Aston Villa?

This.

Liverpool & United will always get higher ratings, so will get shown wherever feasible. I'd wager that the only reason Chelsea v Atletico is on ITV (Matchday 3) is that United kick off early in Moscow on the same day.

Fenerbahce-Twente is such an obviously better pick that I'd be astonished if it turns ITV4 had 2nd choice and ESPN at 3rd or even nothing. Nacional-Bremen is better than that!

Fenerbahçe v Twente seems certain.

Bilbao v Vienna is bizarre for ITV, unless Peter Brackley's villa is somewhere round there and they fancy cutting down on travel expenses?

As already discussed, for this first week, ESPN had the second and fourth picks, and ITV had the third and fifth picks.

For MD2, that's reversed.

Clive Tyldesley will be ITV's man in Bilbao.

Do you know the logic behind picking that game? I'm intrigued.

Will there really be 3 games simultaneously at 8pm? The world's officially gone mad! ariusuk said ITV4 wouldn't be interested in the Blue Square as ratings would be poor. Up against Everton on 5, I wonder what figures ITV4 are expecting for Bilbao v Vienna? Not as much as Wrexham v Chester or whatever would get I would wager.....

I'd think Bilbao-Vienna, but you could easily be correct. However, showing the EL game will be far cheaper.

Thanks ari, I missed/forgot that. Just to clarify, what I meant was who had what picks for the non-British ties (effectively the 4th and 5th picks).

Well, that would explain why ITV4 don't have Fener-Twente, but Bilbao-A Vienna is a nothing game on these shores. Nacional-Bremen is the better game.

Has anyone in the UK ever heard of CD Nacional?

Sparta v PSV was probably the most logical choice, but Bilbao v A Vienna wasn't far behind.

But Bremen is surely the biggest attractive, the squad they have is full of relatively well known players, many with Champions League experience.

Hapoel v Celtic and Fenerbahce v Twente are now confirmed on ESPN.co.uk.
