Cost per viewer is much more important. Other than studio and commentators (likely watching a video feed than in the stadium), there is little cost, compared to to the cost of an OB of a Blue Square match.

Niether will being in much by way of advertising revenue.

Glad to see five going for the most attractive games.

ITV will surely go for Fulham v Basel at 8pm, leaving ESPN in the hands of Belarusian TV for BATE Borisov v Everton at 6pm.

Fourth choice could be anything, although FC Twente is the safe bet.

Fifth choice Roma v CSKA Sofia looks good, maybe Sporting v Hertha Berlin.

Just wanted to make sure, is it ESPN that only have a highlights show or does anyone else do one?

Although I'm not sure who will have what pick (other than Five, of course), here's how I think the rest of the group games will pan out:

Matchday 3:

1st - Fulham v Roma
2nd - Celtic v Hamburg
3rd - Benfica v Everton

Matchday 4:

1st - Everton v Benfica
2nd - Roma v Fulham
3rd - Hamburg v Celtic

Matchday 5 (over 2 days):

1st - Celtic v Hapoel Tel-Aviv
2nd - Fulham v CSKA Sofia
3rd - AEK Athens v Everton

Matchday 6 (over 2 days):

1st - Everton v BATE Borisov
2nd - Basle v Fulham
3rd - Rapid Vienna v Celtic

All of the above take KO time into consideration (i.e. a 20.05 game being more attractive than an 18.05 game). And of course, MD5 & 6 could be influenced by what issues are outstanding.

And I've just noticed, that if this pans out, Five will show:

Everton - 3
Celtic - 2
Fulham - 1

Which ties in with my thoughts on the relative size of the clubs.

ESPN had a very good highlights show for an hour and a half
last night

Rebecca Lowe ran it with Clive Allen in the studio

Basically it was split into 4 sections

Each section started with match highlights and analysis of the 4 main games of the night (Everton,Fulham,Celtic and Twente) , they then showed the other goals in their Group Games.

The fourth section finished with goal highlights of every other match played.

The only glitch was Rebecca Lowe broadcasting her closing
summary during the Round up of goals in the 3rd section !!!

Unlike the Football League show debut(Cut to Film on ITV), she did apologise straight away at the end of the 3rd section

So is this how it works? Five get first picks, ESPN second and ITV4 third?

Five always gets first.

ITV4 and ESPN then share the 2-5th picks.

I was just looking for this thread to post exactly the kind o comment above.

Naturally I agree wholeheartedly with the quote above, I have just watched it, and it is an accomplished, neat and tidy show.

Commentators are used for all the Brit games, and the FC Twente game, with ESPN using the ITV commentary from the Fulham match.

The analysis from Allen was quick and to the point, nothing needless and crap, actually useful stuff.

Rebecca lowe was a good presenter, though as said, the glitch was quickly apologised for, and it wasn't a big deal.

Izzy Clarke (from 5Live) and Joe Speight did the round up Voice Overs, not over the top, hyperbolic and good.

I could turn around and say 'not to broadcasters: this is how you do a highlights show' but I know that ESPN can afford to devote this much time and resources on a highlights show, and commit 90 minutes (grantes inc. adverts)

This show, along with the ITV CL highlights show, means that my european needs have been met, so i'm not complaining.

I was just wondering if anyone could answer this query?

I noticed on ITV4 last night that before/after every ad break - there was a trail for SEAT - the Europa League's title sponsor.

Yet, on Five, their program was sponsored by their Football on Five sponsor - Peugeot.

Are Five wrong here - should they be giving prominence to the Europa League sponsor - or is it not a requirement of the Europa League broadcasts?

I thought the ESPN show was great. I'm guessing other broadcasters have done a similar thing before, but I enjoyed watching the highlights on the same night.

I like the new Europa League format, with the centralised TV rights meaning it's much easier to follow. I'm glad ESPN picked them up.

I don't know if Seat is actually an official sponsor of the Europa League, maybe it was just ITV arranging the sponsorship

"Presented by SEAT."

Edit: Then again, Champions League sponsors are actually integrated into the credit sequences themselves - perhaps its not a sponsorship in the same vein.

That'll be it - ESPN had no sponsorship so that shows they don't have to show the sponsor

The UEFA sponsorship deal with SEAT (the first for the UEFA Europa League/UEFA Cup) was announced just a week ago or something, so I don't think they had much time to add it to the title sequence like the UEFA Champions League opening sequence.

I'm sure they'll either add it later on in the competition (the first knock-out round?) or from the beginning of next season.

I also thought the ESPN highlights show was good.

I think ITV will pick Twente against Steaua Bucharest as their first game. Maybe even Athletic Bilbao again, at Werder Bremen?

ESPN's second game should be Valencia vs. Genoa imo.

Looks like I was wrong about channel 5 picking Everton first time everytime. Credit to them though for choosing what they think is the best game though.

UEFA didn't put the SEAT deal in place in time to gain exclusivety across the broadcasters. There was a cut off point where there was no obligation if broadcasters had one in place, hence Five still being with Peugot for the rest of this season.

Ok Matchday 2 was completely different

The 2 Hours on ESPN was split in two.

The first hour was just highlights of the Fulham game using ITV 4 commentators

The next hour was the highlights which was "Eurosport" style

That means no studio and just the goals and match highlights of ALL games group by group in a 1 hour slot

This program could be repeated on ITV 4 at 8 tonight for thise who do not have ESPN
