Hi. I am thinking of getting a bluray player but at present I have an all in one Panasonic SC-PT850 home theatre system. I just wanted to be able to plug the bluray into this. There is one optical port which is being used to connect to my Sky HD box at present. I believe there are optical switch boxes which will enable me to plug additional devices in. Should this pose any problems?

You can buy 2 into one optical connectors for next to nothing at Amazon.
As long as you only have one device switched on at a time it will work fine.

Dont spend more than a few pound on one.

I assume you have a spare HDMI input on your tv

As nig191262 has mentioned, there are 2way splitter/switches available - before you go ahead and purchase one, what make Sky HD box do you have - if it's a PACE you will need the 3way version, this is because the optical is always live regardless of the box being placed in standby, it will not work with a 2way unless you unplug the HD box from the mains.

I don't know if this issue has been addressed, someone in the Sky HD forum with a PACE box would be able to confirm one way or the other.

Or the simpler way to check is to put the box an standby and see if there's still a red light coming out of the optical socket on the back

I have a Samsung Sky HD box and this also keeps the Optical connection live at all times. I have a Toslink splitter and it is now useless unless the Sky box is switched off at the mains.

I'm going to get a 3 way switchable splitter. They are about £12.99 in Maplin, and even cheaper via the internet

That sounds like it should work fine - just be aware that with that set up the best sound you will be getting out of Blu-ray is slightly higher bitrate Dolby Digital and dts - you won't be able to listen to the HD audio formats (Dolby TrueHD and dts Master Audio) via optical link. If you want to be able to take full advantage then you will need to look at updating your surround sound system too - either with an HDMI audio capable amp that will accept multichannel PCM (if you Blu-ray player is capable of decoding the HD formats onboard), or an amp that will decode the HD formats itself (which will be more expensive still).
