Must have a good optical zoom, manual controls, face recognition etc... Under £290

The Panasonic TZ7/6 was a good choice, but lacks manual controls.

Got to recommend the FX580 K or S, each to their own

I think the FX550 is a really good camera. Might get that if I can't find anything else. Te review of the 500 is trusted reviews, so I'm only hoping that it is better, as they haven't reviewed this one yet, but I have had a look at some sample images and they look real good.

Oh godamnit. THe TZ7 seems like a better camera, with it's 10x optical zoom and 25mm lens. ;(. I can't decide.... It's not going to be mine, a family camera, although I will have more control over it . I'm also going to use it for art next year too. Try to do as many landscape shots as I can.

The Sony cybershot ones are quite good.

I can recommend the Cybershot DSC-W300, neat, robust and takes good pictures. You will also need to buy a decent size memory stick and a case for it.

My OH has used it to gather material for a number of assignments recently.

Assignments? What is he some kind secret agent lool. Nahh, I don't really like it because of the zoom. Even though you can buy an extra lens for it, still meh. Might do though, because of the high MP.

In would recommenced the Canon Ixus 990 IS which I order on the Internet yesterday from CB Camerabox for £249.99 which includes VAT. Delivery is £7.99.

Some web sites had the camera up for over £300.00.

It will replace my old 5 mega pixel Pentax Optio S5i which I brought from Jessops in Colchester back in January 2005. I have given the Pentax to my brother how had a very old 3 mega pixel Kodak that took AA batteries and not the better rechargeable lithium iron battery which he was given in 2006 when my mum upgraded to a Panasonic bridge camera.

Go to http://www.camerabox.co.uk/product1....FcQTzAodqVDijQ and order the Canon Ixus 990 IS.

Also here is a link to a Goggle page that lists everything you would want to know about the Canon Ixus 990IS.

http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en...meta=&aq=f&oq=

And here is a link to the Canons Ixus 990 IS page on Canons official web site.

Finally if you need a memory card then I have found a Sandisk and a PNY both are 8GB SD (Secure Digital) cards on Tescos web site for £19.97 each.

Here is the links to both of them:

http://direct.tesco.com/q/R.203-9611.aspx

http://direct.tesco.com/q/R.206-7520.aspx

But if you don't feel that you need an 8GB SD card then Tescos have 2GB cards from £4.97 and a 4GB SD card for £7.48.

are you sure the TZ6 doesnt have manual controls -
I am sure it will have SP/AP modes, exposure compensation, and burst shooting modes, as well image stabilisation and long zooms

i got a lumix FZ28 cause i prefer the larger body feel - that does have full range of controls as above
