Pen Drives
Good Morning
I have tried several pen drives to copy programmes from the HDR and 3 USB hard drives and I cannot get them to work (formatted as FAT32 and Ext 3) - (a borrowed Cruzer sync did work), which make of pen drives works for people on here? I just want an 8GB pen drive to take off the odd SD programme to play upstairs (or vice versa). Cheers |

Just experimenting, I tried a Buffalo 4GB (RUF2-E chip - case is transparent
) with a half-hour SD recording and it worked fine.

Using Transend JetFlash 8GB formatted EXT3. Works fine. I have a few others that don't!

Probably worth posting the ones that don't work in this thread, too, so people know what to avoid. Having said that, I don't have any of those pesky ones

Agreed. I had difficulty in formatting Scandisk Cruiser, both 4GB and 8GB so gave up. Probably OK if formatted with FAT 16 or 32, but 4GB limit kicks in! It seems that if you find one that works for you then stick with it.

As far as I can see there are hundreds of thousands of possible combinations and Humax have attempted to ensure the maximum number of devices work but some just don't behave as the drivers expect.
We too would love to know what brands do and don't work. I encourage the posting of as many details about sticks as possible: make/model/size/etc. Sandisk and Kingston have been good to us so far. Also every 'promotional gift' memory stick I have been given has worked. We also extensively use Western Digital USB 2.5in drives in this office for transferring media. |

Some have Windows software pre-installed on the drive to enable certain advanced file features for pc's. I'm guessing these are the ones that won't work as standard as the Humax needs Linux.
As general advice, I'd say get a drive that's software free. I have a Dane Electric 4GB 110x (15mb/s) and it works fine. - My particular model is no longer available but there are similar. The 7 day shop: www.7dayshop.com sell loads of pen drives cheaply. |

Thanks for all of the replies, I have brought a Sandisk Cruzer Micro 8gb, hope this works!
Bit annoyed about the 2 x 2.5" drives that do not work though, formatted every which way, just don't want to know. |

I have an 8gb Tevion stick formated to Fat32 which will not work with the Humax. I formated it under Windows 7. I tried formating it to EXT3 under Ubuntu but it wouldn't have it.

If you're referring to 'U3' as supplied on SanDisk drives, they work fine.

Avoid "Memup" brand USB sticks that are greater than 4Gb: they come with their own software and create two extra drives when inserted into a PC. I've tried to repartition the 8Gb one I have into one drive without success. These 8 Gb Memup sticks aren't recognised by the Humax box.

Earlier I reported that my 8gb Tevion stick would not work with the Humax. When I tried to format it to EXT3 under Ubuntu I deleted the partition and tried again, because I kept getting error messages, but it still would not format. When I booted back into Windows 7 and put the Tevion in a USB slot, Windows 7 said it needed to be formated before I could use it, so I again formated it to Fat32 and now it works fine with the Humax.
I would suggest that anyone who has a stick that wont work with the Humax try to delete the partition then format it again to Fat32, you never know this may work for you too. As a thought I think most sticks are formated to Fat32 from new. I had formated mine to NTFS as a while ago I wanted to transfer a file larger then 4gb to another PC. I then formated it back to Fat32 when I tried it in the Humax. Maybe the Humax for some silly reason does not like it if a stick has previously been formated to NTFS. Maybe it would be a help if people whos stick wont work in the Humax say if they had previously formated it to NTFS before formating it back to Fat32 to use in the Humax. Maybe in my case the Humax was still seeing tracies of the NTFS file system. Maybe it would be helpful if the Humax gave you an option to format the stick for you instead of just throwing up an error about its file system. |
