Yes, because the inherent likeability of a bully who constantly picks on a 'sissy' kid has no conceivable ethical problems in the slightest.
I wonder how many of the people who'd be outraged by this are the ones outraged by any story about youth crime and disobedience. Or rap music - better still, violent TV? I'd be interested ... They can just leave it as history. They can just make something brand new instead, like Colin the Conscientious. |

I read the Beano in the 70's/early 80s and loved it.
However i think the removal of the bullying of 'sissy Walter' is necessary if it is to return. Like smoking in the workplace some things just belong to a different age. |

Now don't get me wrong, it was considered acceptable at the time and I wouldn't seek to retrospectively condemn it, but it certainly wouldn't be acceptable today. The world moves on. And as for Walter the Sofite. It just isn't relevant. Kids today don't "have jolly good fun menacing softies" they "smak u upside ur ed init blud lol brap brap" etc |

Yes, like the Dandy/Beano 50 th anniversary special I read recently. Full of stories referring to 'wops, dagos, darkies' etc.

Things don't really 'move on', the targets just change. |

They don't have to revamp it.
They can just leave it as history. They can just make something brand new instead, like Colin the Conscientious. Sometimes things are updated. The horror. It's a brand and a business, it happens. |

Didn't we have a similar story about making Beano characters more PC about 20 years ago. In the end, I think it was just a one off comic strip.

Again, sentimentally playing to the idea that he was fine as he was. Not endorsing arbitrary bullying is not the same as completely sanitising something - it's only conflated to that by people wanting to, as ever, shove it on a popular anti-PC bandwagon and ignore the individual context.

It's funny how kids used to read the Beano, Dandy, Whizzer & Chips etc, and grew up to be perfectly well-adjusted individuals, whereas today kids are force fed PC garbage and go out stabbing each other and end up as drug addicts dying in the gutter.

PC gone mad - if it's true. Could see it as a one-off, but if it's a permanenet change, the the very nature of the character is gine, andd so the name 'Dennis the Menace' is no longer suitable. They should rename him 'Russ the Wuss'

What do you mean by 'again'. I never even said that he was fine in the first place.
![]() I actually said that they should just leave him in history. As KnowAll27 has done subsequently, there is the implication that modifying him destroys the character and leaves him unable to be a 'menace'. It does not mean this, that's a non-sequitur. This is a character who arbitrarily bullies and actually assaults people. The idea that some modification would be involved at some point is bloody obvious. |

Story is exaggerated... Dennis stopped getting the slipper in 1990!
He will still be a mischievous menace, they're just modifying some things. The Beano has always changed with the times. I can see why they want to stop Dennis getting Gnasher to attack people given the trend of yobs using dogs on people. |

What you clearly implied that was changing him away from his bullying, pea-shooting image would make him 'Colin the Conscientious', i.e. boring and goody goody, which is why I answered as such.

If I literally tell you that sentimentality isn't involved on my part at all then there's no implication about it. I just think that they may as well leave him to history now and recognise the character for what he was. And yes, I do believe that the ideas for 'modernising' him do appear to be a bit too politically correct. Just leave him as the horrible bullying menace that he was, that was who he was. Like I say, if they want to make a really soft version of him then they may as well invent a brand new character altogether. I'm sure that Viz magazine would have some good ideas to help them out. |

. . . that's pretty much a sentimental thing to say. I mean why else would you care for the integrity of the character as you see him?He had plenty of adventures that didn't involve the bullying/assault of a weaker kid for the hell of it (a great example for today's kids that is), so all of the complaining that he can't do anything else is demonstrably false. |

Imagine if there was NO Dennis the Menace (not even the American one, before someone tries to be clever!), and someone invented him today. Can you imagine the outcry in the Mail at the incitements to violence and bullying our children were being given to read? Jesus. I bet the tw@s at the Mail don't even know that Superman couldn't actually fly when he first appeared, just jump a very long way. They need to l2comics. |

I can barely watch Doctors without being violently sick - it should be renamed the Politically Correct Citizen Reprogramming Show. If they are PCing up Dennis the Menace then I think I'll move to North Korea - it's more liberal and democratic there.

I think the reason is that in the past parents taught their children the difference between right and wrong, and children could therefore understand the concepts of 'fact and fiction' much easier. But nowadays, with moral standards being at an all-time low, kids don't understand the boundaries of acceptability anymore. They don't understand that it's okay to find a violent comic strip funny but that it would be very wrong to recreate such a scene in real life. Political correctness has done nothing but bewilder the young and frustrate the old. Labour has been so effective and spreading the PC disease that even the opposition party is infected, so not even a change of government will help now. We're stuck with this madness for as long as I can see into the future.

I like how, in the picture in the link, Denis has a cable coming out of his back.
I suppose this is for Microsoft PC updates.. |
