Does any1 agree that swearing in songs should not be edited out? They could at least show unedited songs after 9 o clock.Even shows like MTV X-Rated are usually censored.

I don't agree. Anything on televison has to confirm to the same rules and regualtions. This includes sweraing.

The problem is with MTv is that somehow the wrong tapes get put on after 9/10/11/whenver it states at the beginning due to some reason I dont know about.

There is, however, no watershed on radio broacasts but other regualtions and usually self-policing of stations. If you listen to xfm (London) the songs that do include swearing are left un-editied.

Yes, ridiculous isn't it? We all know what these words are, especially when we can still hear what they rhyme with! It's fashionable at the moment to include them in songs - there's nothing new about this of course. MTV and VH1 do seem to go to extremes - I saw Geri Halliwell interviewed on VH1 recently and even the word 'tits' was bleeped out.

There is a difference I think between using these words humourously (Fun Loving Criminals for example) and using them to cause offence. There was a nice edit on Top Gear last week with OPM's "right now on earth I can't do..." and the presenter cutting in with "SHameful, isn't it, what car makers do".

As for hearing the unedited versions - Music Choice seem to do this quite a lot, and as you're in Ireland Gopher you're probably familiar with No Disco. Actually I think Tara need to be a bit careful with this show as they often repeat it around 12 noon!

Yeah its even stupider when non swear words are edited out.Ive heard stuff like the words hit, shoot, blood etc edited out of songs.
P.S-Strangely enough if u see the D-12 Brits performance on the emap channels words like shit, cum and others have been left in.And they play this all day!

And on the subject of VH1 over editing,i always laugh at the amount of bleeps in the Oasis Behind the Music prog they regularly repeat.

On VH-1 a few days ago at about 11.45 pm they played Stan by Eminem, and it said "You are about to see an edited the version, the unedited version can be seen after 10pm". Duh.

It's not just bad language that gets cut either. In Wheatus's "Teenage Dirtbag", the missing line after "Her boyfriend's a dick" (so that's apparently OK) is "and he takes a gun to school". I guess that wasn't considered PC in America even though they have cop shows with people being shot to death showing at all hours.

Im all for cencoring pre-watershed- little kids should be protected but I dont think that non-swearing words shouldnt be edited and why at 11PM do MTV show the clean versions of most songs? Doesnt an un-edited version exist of summat?

OK here's my opinion. I don't listen to commercial radio, just Radio 1 now, especially cos its gone so good over the last few years. On Radio 1 they try to cut songs as little as they possibly can. They've even experimented with leaving shit uncut in a few songs. If you are into rap check out the new MOP song Ante Up. This song is the most uncut rap song I've heard on the radio for some time. There is lots of rapping about gunning people down, running people down. Almost uncut swearing, so shit is sh*t and mother f*cker. So where the '*' are the sound drops out.

And if u listen to Moyles it is amazing what he gets away with saying, I am amazed sometimes that he can say what he doesn, not that I'm offended of course. Its just that I'm not used to hearing it at that time of the day. He wouldn't get away with it on commercial radio, but Moyles is great if u don't listn u should 3-6pm on radio 1.

As for the music TV stations, MTV is very strict on swearing as has been discussed. They bleep and blur out everything they possibly can. Most of the time they are not happy with the cutting of the videos the record companys have done and they do some themselves. For example, on Limp Bizkit's 'My Generation' Interscope records had cut the swearing, but only just as u would hear on radio 1. so shit would be sh*t and so on. They weren't happy with this and cut it completely and even blurred out his mouth.

As for the Emap channels like The Box. They don't seem to care, they just play them as the record company has cut them. In the case of the new So Solid Crew single '21 Seconds' the record company hadn't cut it at all, not one bit so all of the sewaring is totally in place. MTV cut it themselves and blurred out there mouths, as for Emap, they left it! It is being played (still is) totally uncut for swear words such as shit, n**ger and bitch. There are also uncut drug references. I think its great seeing it uncut and this may have helped the song do so well. To be honest I don't even think the kids would even notice the swearing because as a group, they rap very fast.

Some 'music' lyrics need censoring especially the hateful homophovbic lyrics of gangsta rap and dancehall. Radio 1 plays a lot of it, esp on Saturday nights, and it's well out of order. It's promoting hate.

As for bleeping out words like 'tits' from interviews it would seem a bit silly esp if it was taken out for late evening transmissions.

It's condemning an unnatural way of life, most people don't like sexual deviants & it is good to hear them speak out against this kind of thing. Gays* are always flaunting themselves for all to see, no regard for others & the increasing abuse of children is predominantly caused by gays.

* At one time the word "Gay" conjured up an image of a merry, joyous, bright, jovial, lively, animated person. Not a glimpse, not a hint of sordid, filthy, plague-spreading depravity..

I don't see why a song has to have swearing in it in the first place. It doesn't sound nice.

Should still be concored though. I think CDs should be rated if they have swearing on depending on how much and how strong it is like videos are, rather than sticking an explicit lyrics sticker on and letting 5 year olds buy it.

If there is swearing on a record it should have a rating depending on how bad the lyrics are and how bad on the record is.

I still think that swearing should be edited out after 9pm, because some children are still up after that time, but the lanuage that they use in records has been heard many a time and use by children playing in the streets or in playgrounds.

For the last year now radio companies have been in talksto issue age ratings not too dis-similar to thatt of ELSPA ratings on comouter games. The jsut can't seem to agree ona syste though!

The new Slipknot album, out on Monday, has a huge quater-CD-case size 'Parental Advisory' sticker on it, which means that record comnpanies are thinking a little to protect minors.

Apparently a rap conference in the States a few months ago got ppl like P.Didddy to tone down the swearing a little.Seems he forgot all about that when he recorded Bad Boy For Life
P.S-On Radio1 this afternoon in the song Ante Up,im fairly sure that lines similiar to
"Ante Up,go **** that fool"
were left in.But previously ive heard it were thats censored.
Also,Radio 1 is rather odd in its censoring of Purple Hills.Today i heard it were Em is allowed to say "And five i hit,aw s**t"but on tv hes cut off from after "and five i".But when Swifty[i think]says "I take more shots at one time"its cut off.Unlike tv!As is the "drugs kill"line.

I was going to say that, Radio 1 have cut to shreds all references to drugs in purple hills. Its the one time u can hear a song less cut on the TV than on Radio 1.

And the lines in Ante Up are 'Gun butt that fool'
I have the album. I love the way that is cut on Radio 1 they have left so much in and just cut the swearing enough so the kids can't hear it but we know exactly what they are saying.

Well, in Eminem's 'Stan' the word 'ass' is cut in most radio edits and the video, however the Groove Amada song 'I see you baby' is based upon the lyrics 'shakin' that ass' and this is/was never censored.

The same applies to the word 'bitch', editied out in many-a-rap song, Meridith Brooks had no problem getting her hit 'Bitch (Nothing In Between' played on radio and TV!

Gin seems to be a highly cencored word in rap artists like eminem and DRE but people like Shaggy and robbie get away with it. I dont see why gun should be cencored anyway.

Im suprised they allowed that deadly machinegun effect on Purple Hills. On the subject of guns,on the ancient gangsta hit Regulate they cut out the main bit of the song where i think Nate Dogg shoots some boys or something, but ppl are shot on tv apll the time beofre 9 without notice!

On Virgin recently they recently played an unplugged version of Wheatus' Teenage Dirtbag; complete with

"Her Boyfriend's a d***, and he brings a gun to school..."

just after 6pm, way before the watershed.
