Hi,

I have been looking to get a Sony receiver - at the moment any
one of the STR DB 870, 940 or 1070.

What can anyone recommend? What is the huge advantage of 6.1 over 5.1 channel sound, and what else might I need to benefit from it?

Any comments welcome...

Cheers,
Iain

I would definitely recommend the STRB1070; I am getting this very soon. It has been getting some very good reviews and it’s better then its predecessor (940). See the link below for some interesting comments:

6.1 is the next system up from the 5.1 and it has an extra speaker for the centre back. I have not heard the sound but would imagine it to be even better than the 5.1. The only trouble is there are not that many dvds made in 6.1 at the moment and only in Region 1 versions of films. The Dolby site has a lot of information on the sound systems.

I have a 5.1 system at the moment but if you have the cash I would invest in the 6.1 to be more future proof. It will obviously still handle 5.1 sound now and then be able to cope with any 6.1 discs you purchase. I would imagine 6.1 is where we will all be headed next.
