Panasonic DMR E50EBS - cheapest place to buy?
I'm looking to buy a Panasonic DMR E50 EBS DVD recorder but when I was looking at prices before Christmas, most places seem to have this recorder at £250 ... now I can't seem to find it anywhere under £269 ...
Also, quite a few places that I had bookmarked no longer seem to sell this item -- has it been discontinued? I'm based in the UK, so would appreciate any links or shops here that sell the E50 cheers |

I had one on order from John Lewis and two weeks later had a phone call to say that they could not get them as they had been discontinued.
You might still find some around so if you really want one of these then snap up the first one you can find. I ended up spending a bit more and getting a pioneer instead. |

I bought one
I Bought one from comet, £276, but i could take it then and there. I would recomend it, it seems to do everything!!! ... One word of warning though, it does not write dvd-rw .... if you want to re-write, your gonna need DVD-RAM ... but it comes with one of those so no problems there.

Yes - it has been discontinued although there are still a few left in the system. As far as I can tell the E55 which is to replace it soon is very little different.
As I was keen to get one quickly and didn't really mind whether it's an E50 or 55, I have just got one from Empire Direct (http://www.empiredirect.co.uk/) for £268. Placed my order on Friday - they phoned on Friday afternoon to say it would arrive on Tuesday, which it did. Interestingly, looking at their website now it seems no longer to be on offer, so I guess they've now sold out too. No doubt the E55 will have some compelling feature that I'll wish I'd waited for! bit gutted that this model has been discontinued, as after a lot of research this model came out the best buy for myself ... lots of positive reviews online and in printed magazines ... and it supported RAM discs ...
![]() Any idea how expensive the new E55 model will be? I was only looking to pay £250 so the E50 was perfect Would anyone recommend buying a second hand one off eBay -- or am I asking for trouble not buying new? |

The E55 is more plain looking than the E50 no where near as good looking as E50 a ploy maybe to lower the price of it's entry level model.
Remote control is laid out differently. New feature will be upto 8 hours recording in FR mode |

Not sure whether you're asking about the E50 or the E55 - probably the answer's the same for both anyway...
What I was told by a local dealer when discussing the E50 is that to make it multiregion, Panasonic do provide an official hack but that, unlike some other makes (e.g. Phillips), you need a special piece of equipment to apply it, which panasonic repair shops would have but the general public don't. So - you have it done but it will cost you. The impression I got, when talking to salespeople before I got mine, was that if you buy the machine then try to get it upgraded to MR, it could cost you as much as £60. If you make it a condition of sale that they do it, they'll try to charge £40 but if you really push hard, they may go as low as £10 extra for MR at the time of sale. In the end, i couldn't be bothered with it all so took the machine as is. Hope that helps. Alan |
