Should the Scots just stay where they belong - Emmerdale is a real mix of accents as far as I can see, it seems a haven for those from teh North-East! Almost all of the DIngles are from Lancashire (though I think we are meant to think they have Yorkshire accents) and the Wyldes and Lambs have southern/midlands accents.

I really like the Bartons, including Ma. It is really refreshing to have a likeable, morally upright, hardworking family (much as I LOVE the DIngles) who get on. I think the younger daughter needs a bit more time to bed-in to the role but I trust entirely in ED's ability to cast young parts brilliantly.

I vaguely recognise the actor who plays Ma Barton but I think she has made this new role her own already.

I find her rude, to the point of arragant. Very nasty streak, in this character.

I'm not sure on her character. She is just a bit hit and miss.

When she was in the Ice Crean wars episode of New Tricks she had an Italian accent - I thnk it was Italian anyway. It was strange hearing her not talk Scottish. And she appeared in something else with an English accent.

Excuse me, is their something wrong with her accent . Are Scots just supposed to stay oop north and not travel within the United Kingdom.

There have been more scots than her in Emmerdale and I am sure there will be many more

I can't take to her in this. Shame as the actress has been good in everything else. Maybe she needs more time to settle in.

Nice to see that my comment was taken to the furthest point of misinterpretation.. I haven't got a problem with Scotish people or their accents. In fact I love the accent. I just don't find her accent fits in with the rest of her family, which makes her feel out of place. If you want to read more into my comment about her accent feel free.
However, I was gutted when she left Doctors and annoyed she didn't stay in EE for longer and not impressed when she left The Bill, so her accent has never been a problem prior to joining Emmerdale.
Laurie Brett has a scottish accent in RL, her accent in EE is very convincing.

I agree, for me it was the accent thing, just doesn't suit the character and family. Ken what I mean?

Who did she play in EE? I'm racking my tiny mind but I can't remember.

And I didn't know that Laurie Brett's Scottish! That IS a good accent she does.

I'm sure you'll get used to her accent on ED (smiling smilie), after all , ED is VERY cosmopolitan, it has and has had people from all over the UK and Ireland! For a tiny Yorkshire village it attracts alot of outsiders - even Aussie's!!!!

I know this, believe me a friend of my is from Paisley and she married a man from Cambridge, her daughter has a southern accent. In fact there are plenty of people I know with these accent differences. However, it doesn't suit the character or the family in my opinion.

She was Max's bit on the side when he first appeared in the show or very early on anyways.
Oh I don't have an issue with Scots accents. I just don't think it suits the character.

I dont remember her in EE either , thought I did like her in The Bill, poor Neil Manson, not had much luck with women. I know he should not have been having an affair wit her, but his wife was a bit off. Damn Mark Fowler

I quite like her. I like all the Bartons actually although the two daughters are a tad irritating. Doesn't really help that I keep getting their names mixed up.

Ah I remember now, thanks!

You're entitled to your opinion layne, you didn't say you HATED her accent just that you didn't think it suited the rest of her family, fair do's!

I wouldn't have remembered if anyone else had played Max's bit of fluff, I just loved her in Doctors and in the bill.

Thanks. Glad you understood what I meant.

Why should Mrs B's accent be out of place in the Dales, after all didn't James Herriot's (aka Alf White) spend most of his life in Glasgow before moving to Yorkshire to become the Dales best known vet.

Couldn't stand her in Take the High Road either

You're not getting what I am saying, any accent is welcome in the Dales, the accent just doesn't go with the character or the family.

And I don't understand why it doesn't go with the family Accents don't make a family, people do.

I promise I am not trying to be a pain here I genuinely don't understand what you mean. Is it because she has married a Yorkshireman and her children have the accent of the place in which they were raised (sort of) and therefore her accent stikes you as odd alongside them? You said in an earlier post that the accent didn't sit well in the Dales and I don't get that either. HAving been somebody who has essentially had to leave a job because my accent didn't fit and I got a lot of grief I understand that difference can be hard to stomach in rural places like ED but what characteristics does Ma Barton have that don't match her accent?
Cheers.
