Which comics did you read as a kid?

I was a huge Beano fan and never got The Dandy because of my loyalty! Bash street kids ruled!

Comics these days seem rubbish in comparison!

Dandy for me, over the Beano for some reason, also Cheeky Weekly and WOW! when they lasted.

And I suupose, even though they aren't comics like the Beano or Dandy, I'd have to say Asterix and Tin Tin books. They almost taught me to read.

I read a lot of Marvel UK comics from the mid 80s to mid 90s. Mainly Transformers UK (possibly the finest comic ever produced in the UK) but that spread to Thundercats UK, Dragons Claws, Deaths Head and even the odd issue of The Real Ghostbusters. I used to lap up the Marvel UK comics. 20 years later and I've still got practically all of them (somewhere).

During my early university years I moved onto the US comics. Marvel UK had all but died in 1992 so by the mid 90s it was US comics or nothing. I actively collected Fantastic Four, then X-Men, then Spiderman. Eventually I stopped. Most of the comics were onto the "It had to happen.. Superhero 1 vs Superhero 2" phase of their lives and I got bored.

Being a child of the late 70s and early 80s, it was the war comics initially for me, Battle and Victor.

I read both the Dandy and Beano though as well.

Growing up in Spain I used to collect Spiderman comics as a kid (in spanish).

I also had a thick hardback "best of" Superman comic/book which I adored, it had stories from different decades, from the early years to the recent ones of the time (80's). I liked noticing how the tone, characters & drawing styles changed over the decades.

Also "Mortadelo y Filemon", a series of very funny comics about a couple of incompetent secret agents. Very popular still to this day with kids and adults alike in Spain.

I read The Beano, still do. I collect all the old Beano, Dandy, Beezer, Topper, and Sparky annuals as well, despite the fact Sparky finished before I was born, and Beezer and Topper finished before I started collecting (I started in 1995).

DC and Marvel through the sixties, but I did not realise the comics my newsagent sold were six months old until I discovered Forbidden Planet shop in Berwick Street. It has moved about six times since then. I did read some British comics notably Reed Randall The Steel Claw.

Nutty, Dandy, Oink!, Buster, Whizzer & Chips, Tiger, Roy of the Rovers, a football-related comic who's name escapes me at the moment, and (for a sort period due to Tiger merging) Eagle.

I think I had around 5-6 large cardboard boxes worth of comics which I put on a bonfire, when I was aged 17. My parents were moaning at me for the amount of them taking up space in my bedroom, and that I was 'too old to be still having them anyway'. So, one afternoon, out I went to the bottom of the garden and set the entire lot on fire.

The entire run of Nutty and Oink! from No.1 to the very end, was part of that burn-out. I'm still not sure if I've forgiven myself for it!!!!

Remember the Oink No.1 Free Gift? The flexible, pink plastic record? The quickest to disappear.

Thing was, though, the concept of what the value of them was never considered. I think I remember trying to figure out how much I spent on them, over the years, to get to that stage - but never thought about future worth.

I wish I could remember what the title was for that other football-related comic. I remember the 'star' character being some sort of 'playmaker' type footballer. As I never heard of that term before that point, it's the only thing I remember about it.

Shiver and Shake, Whizzer and Chips, Cheeky, Monster Fun, Buster, Whoopee, Battle, Action, Battle/Action, 2000AD, Tornado, Warlord, Bullet, Starlord, Eagle, Roy of the Rovers and although not a great fan of Marvel I had Rampage, Star Wars and odd tarzan issues.

I still have a fair few in boxes and some complete sets, but for the past couple of years I've been trying to get scans of UK comics pre'1983 (which is around when I stopped getting them) - got a few like early battles, first few hundred 2000AD's, Starlord, Tornado and pre-ban Action but really want to get post ban Action, later Battle, Battle/Action and Roy of the Rovers issues - I've bought reprints as books as they've come out but they're not the same as tend to be edited/censored now and it's interesting seeing the old adverts for toys/models I used to buy.

I don't tend to read much modern stuff as I'm not keen on the artwork type compared to 70's UK style and I've never been a fan of superheroes.

Sorry guys, that one had been going for quite a while. The one I'm trying to think of was brand new - roughly very late 80s, early 90s?

Apologies for being so vague, terrible memory.

My comic reading days were the late 60s and early 70s. Favourites were Dandy, Beano, Beezer, Whizzer and Chips and I remember the excitement of a new comic starting Cor!! although all I can remember from this last one is Gus the Gorilla. Happy memories!

That sounds like Hot-shot then, it ended up merging with Roy of the Rovers after less than a year. http://www.comicsuk.co.uk/FamilyTree...leBox=Hot-Shot

That thumbnail is a tad small to confirm for sure, but the mere mention of Gary 'the ears' Lineker is enough to blow some cobwebs of my brain cells. So, on that alone, you're awarded a double thumbs-up, cheers!

The Beano, every single week. And I never got rid of a copy. I had huge stacks of Beanos everywhere. I threw them all out long ago, though. And then sometimes I got the Dandy, which was never as good

I really wish I still had mine. I remember trying to do the dance movements to that song, bit difficult though since I recall something about waving your trotters in the air & I had no trotters myself

Also remember getting The Beano every week. Well my brothers did & I read it too. We joined the Dennis the menace fanclub.
Other comics I recall are Whizzer & Chips, Buster, Topper, Beezer, Nipper.........

As a child of the 80s I was a huge fan of the DC Thompson comics, and every week I would rush to the newsagents to collect my copies of The Beano, The Dandy, The Topper and The Beezer. I bought them weejkly, and also bought every single seasonal special (Summer specials etc), teh monthly Comic Library Series which were in a smaller book type format, teh annuals and any other spin off.

In later years, still in the 80s, I also added Victor, 2000AD, and Eagle to my list. I would also randomly buy any other comic that might have gotten my attention on a visit to the newsagents.

Funnily enough, despite my love for superhero stories, as a kid I never bough any marvel or other superhero comics. I think it might have been in that we were limited in what got flown into Gibraltar from the UK mainland during the 80s. Sometimes fklight delays or cancellations resulted in comics being delivered late to Gibraltar which was always very annoying!

I also never threw away a single copy of any of my comics for the entire time I was buying them. I collected boxes and boxes of them, and then also added copies passed on to me by my older cousins and any others that I might have found at juble sales, second hand shops etc.

Unfortunatelt, I got to an age and passed on my entire collectioon to my younger cousins, who never shared the same love for them that we previous oowners had, and what had been a great collection, was disposed of eventually by them!!!
