Long story short, I like nothing more than a handful of plain salted tortilla chips to snack on in the evenings, which may sound boring, but I love them! I usually have Doritos Lightly Salted, but was at the Chichester Chili Fiesta last week and tasted the most gorgeous tortilla chips at one stand - unfortunately they were not for sale and just for sampling dips so was unable to buy them! They were more salty, paler and slightly thicker and greasier than Doritos, and utterly utterly gorgeous.

Now, I can't find any decent chips, let alone the chips of dreams described above, anywhere! I have tried Sainsburys, Tesco, Waitrose...all look exactly like Doritos. Can anyone recommend a nice brand which might be the ones I tried? Or any other nice ones?!

Not holding out much hope, but I can try!

none of the supermarket ones i've tried are like doritos. I usually just buy tesco value ones, i don't really like doritos salted ones at all.

I always go for the plain Tescos ones - I used to get the more expensive ones, but actually prefer the Tescos.

I make my own. I buy the corn tortillas from here, cut them into triangles and fry in Alfa One Rice Bran oil then sprinkle with a little sea salt whilst still hot.

Wonder if it's the Discovery tortilla chips? That's what a Mexican restaurant serves near here and they're really nice.

I usually only buy them when they are on special offer. Doritos chilli heatwave are yummy, althought the name doesn't match the product.

Thanks, they are! I recommend them especially if you're having a bunch of people round. They are always popular.

Are those corn tortillas the same as the Old El Paso corn ones?

No, the Old El Paso ones are long life and contain hydrogenated fat. These are the nearest thing to anything I've ever tasted in Mexico. They store well in the freezer.

I adore Dorito's COOLLLLLLLLLLL, yummy. The Chilli Heatwave is quite yummy too. But Cool all the way for me. Don't have them a lot though.

I've been searching for those, but Discovery don't even have them listed on their website! I hate deep frying things as I don't have a deep fat fryer (have bought three in a row which all broke in different ways after about 3 uses, so gave up). But those homemade ones sound great, homemade always tastes best! I might have to convince a friend to make me some!

Sigh. Looks like I might have to go into my local mexican restaurant and beg for a bucket load of their chips to take away!

I never realised tortilla chips were made by frying tortillas

You can shallow fry them if you prefer, I sometimes do that if I am only making a small batch

Sounds fab. Do they have to be done in that oil? I've never heard of it so could I just use vegetable oil or something? God I'm hungry now

M&S used to do some that sound like the ones sampled in the OP; very dense and moreish! I love spicy ones too if it's up to me but rarely get to eat them anyway as OH hates all things tortilla for some reason!

Yes, you could use any oil of your choice.

Fantastic! I think I'll try some tonight - I've been wondering how I'm going to get through a pack of 8 tortillas in 2 days! I don't get why they have such a short life once they're opened, but it's a good excuse to scoff loads.

As degsy says, the freezer is your friend

What I do is use the food bags you put veg in from the supermarket, split them in two so you have two sheets then layer them between the tortillas then put the whole thing in a bag. Then I can take out what I like.

I developed that trick before Cool Chile made the tortillas and I bought them in packs of 60 from Mexgrocer! I still do get them from there if I'm throwing a Mexican dinner party. They sell some wonderful salsas, mole sauces and refried beans too.

I hate the texture. And I know this sounds odd but I think that tortilla chips taste like the smell of goats :S

Has anybody tried Riceworks Rice Crisps?

They're tortilla chips but a bit more crunch to them, the salted i've tried and they are really yummy (More salt to them than normal Doritos).

Also has anybody else here made a chicken ceasar salad, and instead of using crutons, put in some crushed up salted doritos in. Yummy
