Don't know if anyone out there can help but I have an american recipe which calls for two 16oz cans of tomatoes (obviously no problem there) as well as an 8oz can of tomato sauce .

Does anybody have an idea what they might mean. It seems to be rather a lot if they mean tomato puree and I am wondering about passata?

Any input would be very welcome.

Thanks

I would suspect passata. Seems strange having them both though as i'm guessing you would strain it anyway.

Just whack in some ketchup, am sure it will taste lovely

Actually thinking about it, they always refer to what we call 'tomato sauce' ketchup, so their tomato sauce must be passata (but it's too difficult to pronounce )

As an American living in the UK, I can tell you that tomato sauce is passata, like a very thick tomato juice. However, like passata, some come with different herbs and spices. I would recommend to check out the ingredients in your recipe before using one with other herbs and spices.

Whatever you do, don't use ketchup if you have an American recipe! In America, ketchup is ketchup and not called sauce as it is here.

Thank you all very much for the replies.

Could I possibly also ask summerwine how much is an american cup in either fluid ozs or millilitres. I have googled in the past but you tend to get a selection of different results.

Approx 250ml. Actually it's about 236ml but I always measure at 250 because it's easier.

Tomato puree is tomato paste in American.
in the US, tomato puree is pureed tomatoes.. i.e. tomato puree. Thicker than a juice, but pulpy as it is tomatoes that are pureed into a sauce.

Tomato Paste is a thick condensed entity, you should be able to stick your spoon into it and it will stand straight. Comes in a tube as well.

I would have thought that bog standard tomato sauce would be plain passata. Anything else and you are getting in to the realms of pasta sauces like ragu and dolmio.
