Nokia N900 Hands On
Hey, Hands on here - http://www.mobile-review.com/review/...-n900-en.shtml Specs overall seem better than the N97 (faster processor & better screen) and it's due out Q4, quote from the review: Quote:
Due to variety of visual effects, smooth transitions and decent reaction time of the touch screen (which is a significant improvement over the Nokia N97), the N900 feels more like the Apple iPhone. At the same time its UI looks nothing like that of the iPhone - it's just different, but eye-candy nonetheless (maybe somewhat similar to HTC's products). Everyone who had a chance to play with it noted that it didn't look like any other Nokia-branded device, yet it was an enjoyable experience overall.
What do you guys think?Gormy. |

I was gearing up for the N97 at the end of my contract - looks like I have something new to lust over...

I had a 770 years ago, and it was a good bit of kit.
Had read that Nokia were intending an evolution of the 770/800/810 that would include GSM/phone functionality. And had also read that the Hildonised UI would be dropped. Its likely to be more of a "raw" unix type system than the iPhone or Android, but something that I'd be more likely to use than either of those though. |

Sounds better than the N97. The lack of Symbian is also a plus IMO. |

What a phone. I was going to get a HTC Hero but now I think I'll wait for this.

What's funny is the video with the Nokia chaps shows them playing a pirated copy of Star Trek XI on their phone.
So much for the Ovi store... |

I own an N97, not sure i have made up my mind about it yet, but the N900 seems pretty good, the software and interface running on it is definately better, but i'm not sure about the keyboard or the screen, it looks odd to me

So far I love everything about it from what I've read or seen. Though I wont know for sure until I've tested one out.
There are discussions happening on other forums that seem to indicate that it wont has MMS capabilities on release, but they are still working on it and should have it out soon. I personally, can't see this being true, though it's not specifically listed as a "feature" on the N900 technical specs page. I'd be suprised if it doesn't have MMS from the get go, but could live with it if I knew it'd be released in an update before the end of the year. Who knows it could just be a rumour started by an Apple Fanboy or something, since the iPhone got slated for ages for not having MMS. |

I do wonder if all those people who complained about the iPhone not having MMS will complain about this too... probbaly just Apple haters ![]() It didn't bother me that the iPhone didn't have MMS and it doesn't bother me here either, it's not a feature I ever use. |

Thanks for your reply. Do you think that: Quote:

means they will add it eventually? It's a feature I use maybe less than once a month, so it's not a deal breaker, but I'd like to know it was coming in the near future. I was suprised when I found out the iPhone couldn't MMS and am suprised that the N900 can't MMS. The only defense I can offer the N900 is that it's not primarily a phone, it's an internet tablet with a phone added on. Either way, with it being Linux based, someone will surely add some kind of MMS capabilities sooner or later. |

The same reason Apple didn't add it to begin with, it requires man hours which are often better spent doing other things, if enough people want it they will do it.
Sure, I could use Flickr/Facebook as alternatives, but those are not always options. My mum has no internet presence, so I have to use MMS to keep her up to date on what happens with her grandsons. Similarly with my ex wife - she wouldn't ever accept me as a friend on facebook, we just MMS each other pictures of whatever our son gets up to. |

There's another review on The Register.
I have an N97 and I'm a bit annoyed, mainly because I'm concerned that Nokia are switching away from its O/S and this will harm its prospects in the long run, especially for third party software. At least Nokia themselves still seem committed to sorting out its software problems. I'm not sure I'd buy an N900, though. I'm put off by the extra weight (181g versus 150g) and bulk (113cc versus 88cc). That may not sound like a big difference, but for me the N97 is right at the edge of what is pocketable. The smaller battery (1320mAh versus 1500mAh) plus more RAM and bigger screen must make for worse battery life. Its keyboard doesn't look any better to me. The review says it doesn't have Java, which is hard to believe. It'd be nice to have the better screen etc, but it seems to me that the N97 has generally made its hardware compromises for good engineering reasons. The N900 looks good, but it's not perfect. |
