I realise this is skimming the boundaries of the correct forum but I know a few BT folk float about in here.

Are BT creating any new exchanges with the 21st CN rollout? The reason I ask is a house I'm looking at is on the boundaries of a current exhange and I can expect 0.3M broadband speed (about 4.5 miles from exchange). From info wwwebber posted a few months back ASDL Extreme wont add any speed to households that distance.

Next, what would be a good idea (i.e. petition, and to who) to get BT to consider a new exchange, I know the house is close to a 'no-spot' where ppl are complaining of no broadband at all and it is a village of reasonable size. I would have thought if there was enough interest there should be a process to investigate the viability of a new exchange.

I doubt you'll see any new exchnages, but what could happen is that BT will fit some ADSL equipment closer to those houses (in one of the green boxes you see everywhere) and then provide broadband from there. Although the exchange hasnt become any closer, the broadband has so to speak!

Its called Fibre To The Cabinet (FTTC). This is being trialled right now and is the natural successor to ADSL. I'd assume that remote areas would be prioritised down so dont hold your breath for anything happening soon.

lowebb - further to what speckled hen has said a basic way to consider the changes are:

21CN - overhaul of the UK infrastructure for telephony and IP comms. A lot of this has been done but not completed.

ADSL2 Rollout - matching the infrastructure that Sky/Be etc have implemented to give faster speeds.

FTTC - As someone else said - putting in optic fibre up to the green box so there will be less signal degradation. Say your exchange is 2miles away and your local cabinet is 500metres away, it'll connect at the cabinet instead.

FTTP - Optic fibre will go from the cabinet to the house so should be a pure IP link with little external factors impacting the speed of the connection.
