Max will be 90 this year and for all people think of him as a light entertainer famous for nostalgia shows and Family Fortunes, there is a serious side to him. I did see him in Spare The Rod, a film which was completely the opposite of Singalongamax where he plays a teacher in a very rough London secondary school where his progressive views are at odds with his headmaster.

Yes I remember that, he seemed pretty good in these urban dramas. However, to most people, Max will be remembered for Singalongamax, novelty songs and Family Fortunes, but he was a good serious actor.

He appeared in a few stinkers as well, like Bobbikins (can't remember it being shown on UK tv in a long time - but what a cast !).
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0053661/ Apart from Max, it's great to see Jack Parnell's name in the end credits as Musical Director - and that wild violin riff in the middle of the theme tune ! |

Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see it again, and I think even Max would admit it wasn't his finest hour. You're right, Joan Collins is very touchy about that movie - wasn't that the one where she guzzled down a lot of the local seafood off-set and came over all blotchy..?

Spare the Rod is quite a good film and ahead of its time as Max portrays a teacher who wants the pupils in his no hope secondary modern to better themselves and is also strongly opposed to corporal punishment as it is seen not to work as the school is extremely rough and undisiplined. It is an attack on the selective system and corporal punishment which were both rightly phased out as the sixties progressed.

I watched FF from the beginning as a kid. It was great.
![]() Bob and Les were great but Max was so bad he's probably my favourite! The "Turkey" episode is a gem. Will be good to re-live it tomorrow! ![]() According to Wikipedia, when FF was on a break in 1986, Max had offered to finance it's production himself. |

But when Andy Collins took over I just couldnt watch it anymore. Nothing against the guy as loved him in Games World but him hosting this gameshow he sucked. I tried to watch Vernon's version but just hated it. He makes it as if hes so important than the contestants who just seem to be celebs who dont take the game seriously that they muck about. Anything after Les I wont watch and this is coming from someone who loved the show since Bob Monkhouse first started. |

Andy Collins was the warm-up act for All Star Mrs and Mrs yesterday. He never failed to make the audience laugh inbetween breaks!

This episode was a classic!! They must have had around 7 attempts on "Name a famous Irishman?" before hitting a correct answer! (I mean Trevor McDonald and Des O'Conner!!!!
)Maybe they should have answered turkey for all questions in this episode for what it was worth!! |

Watched it as well. I love turkey so much I'd probably take it to the beach with me too.
