An Evening With Failed Recordings
Ok, we had a busy day and evening yesterday and trusted our Humax HDR to record scheduled programmes as usual. The only difference being is that the HDR was on full eco standby all day- it has just not been switched on at all.
Later in the evening, when we returned we found the HDR had missed multiple schedules- Eastenders (BBC1), Coronation Street and Kingdom (ITV1). Of course,we could reschedule the soap for their repeats- but Kingdom is not repeated (i've never seen it and this rerun was ideal to catch up with the show; being incredibly neurotic i can't watch the series knowing an episode is missing). This is the first time this has happened in a month of having the foxsat. And strange it was over a couple of channels and multiple programmes. It hadn't crashed, it switched on out of standby as usual, just seemed to 'forget' to switch on. Programmes were still in the schedule- Eastenders and Kingdom were, not sure about Abhoronation Street. Is it due to not being used at all that day- could this be the problem? With a holiday soon, i may have to have the auto-on set for every evening (mind you, i'd be happy if it continued to drop the soaps from the schedule). |

Did you have a power cut whilst you were out? If you have one that lasts longer than 25 seconds (figure taken has been quoted by several forum members in other posts) then the HDR has to be brought out of standby following power restoration before it will record.
Annoying I know and pretty slack of Humax not to test such basic functionality before releasing it. Should be fixed in a future firmware update but whether it will make the next update I'm not sure. |

I have to add I haven't experienced any weird problems with my HDR or any failed recordings so far..
Some people have gone to the trouble of fitting a UPS to their HDRs to ensure a stable power supply. If your recordings are that important to you then I think maybe the UPS idea is a good one, it will certainly keep a box up longer than 25 seconds for sure, although if a power cut is prolonged UPS times can be anything between a couple of minutes to an hour typically, depending on battery size and current draw from the device it's connected to. |

I'd expect even the smallest of UPS would keep the Humax in standby mode for many hours/days keeping the clock intact, it would be when it wakes to do the recordings that the more serious drain would occur. Of course in that scenario you've gone past protecting the clock against 25sec+ power cuts and are into keeping the box recording no matter what happens, a situation no PVR can cope with without a UPS setup.
