Moving house. Advice please.

In a few weeks, I am moving into a student house, and its been left to me to sort out a phone line and internet. The previous tenants had a BT phone line, and they ended their account a few months ago when they moved out. As they were using a BT phone line, will BT try and charge us the £122.50 connection fee?

Also, would it be possible for the line to be re-activated before we moved into the house, so that it is all set up for when we arrive, i.e. would anyone need to enter the house if it’s just a simple case of re-activating the line?

You should be fine. If the phone line was in use as recently as you say then it's probably only a 'stopped' line which means there won't be a reconnection charge, and also that you can have the line activated without the need for anyone to visit the premises.

The best thing to do is to give them a phone with the address you're moving to. They'll tell you straight away.

How long will you be staying?

If there is any likelihood of a charge being incurred, you could get the free installation offer* if you are able to meet the 18 months and 10 calls per month contract criteria.

* Phone 0800 800 150 and ask for the Customer Options Team (most of them know about the offer).
