@Bob_cat - Option To Delete When Pressing OK Not Just The Filemanager
Ayce
23-08-2009
Bob,

Whats the chance of delete been an option under the menu when you press the OK button on a item when in the media section ? eg the bit where it says play, resume from last point and I think rename ?

The file manager is OK but I think this key feature should be easier to reach than rename ?

Thanks

Terran

PS Loving the box

It is there... it just disappears when the box is recording, as delete is not possible while recording

Definitely there.

Wait until the HDR is not recording anything and press Media, then press OK (on a recording) and the four options are:-

Play from the last played position
Play from the start
Delate a file
Rename

What you can't do though without file manager is delete a folder which is a bit of a pain.

I agree it can be a pain going through so many actions to delete, but there have been occasions when such a long process has stopped me from deleting something in error.

Personally I'd rather have a long process. Even if it "Wears my finger out".

IMO the 'Delete' option should just mark that recording for deletion regardless - rather than performing the actual delete there and then. The box can then perform the actual delete when otherwise idle. This would allow the 'delete' option to be available regardless of other recordings in progress as well as allowing lots of recordings to be marked for deletion without having to wait for each deletion to complete (which can take a while - especially with HD recordings).

I presume this is something that has been addressed in the upcoming update...?

If it worked like TiVo (at least the old uk one), every programme is marked for deletion unless you choose to keep it.
I'd prefer old programmes I haven't chosen to keep get removed instead of it filling to 100% and stopping it from recording new things.

There's probably multiple posts of dreamy wishes!

TBH Mike, the number of actions to delete once in the File Manager are the same, delete then confirm so there's no more safety. All it is, is a pain to have to bring up file manager in the 1st place before you can do it.

That would be the box of nightmares for most not dreams. The large numbers of people on here who were compelled to upgrade their hard drives shows just how many people do keep programmes for extended periods. To have a box that deleted everything not watched recently would be a nightmare for most people who save a library of programmes / films for a rainy day.

Except the long process of having to go into the file manager to remove a folder - and the cursor position being reset in doing so - has CAUSED me to delete things in error.

Having fewer steps / more consistent actions can reduce the likelihood of deleting things in error.

Something that Sky+ has managed to get right since the day it was launched. You have an option for it to automatically delete files that you HAVE watched (providing you haven't marked as keep) when it runs out of space. If it still hasn't got enough space, then it will start deleting unwatched programmes - oldest first (again, unless marked keep).

Ultimately, when you run out of space, you are going to lose something - either things you've watched, very old things you haven't (and therefore possibly won't), or the stuff you've asked it to record right now.

I could blather on about TiVo all day. It was right for me. Sadly it died and is officially unsupported now. That was over 5 years of happy primitive times.

I like one of the TiVo delete methods.
When you stop a recording within 15 minutes (I think) of the end, it offers you the option to delete it.

One of my TiVos is still in occasional use when I need Freeview for Dave/Fiver/FiveUSA/Sky3/Virgin1.
The other 2 are sitting in the loft.

Deleting the programs isnt the problem, its the bloody folders that you cant turn off or cant auto delete empty ones, that means you have the hassle of going into the file manager every time you want to delete a series record item.

Just wanted to say thankyou.. I must read these forums too much and ended up deleting everything via the file manager. This thread has been a very pleasant realisation that you can delete from the media page with the playback options. Lovely!!

Guys - thanks for all the tips but...... the following images are what I first saw when I posted this.

Now all I can say is that one programme was recording ( well still is ) when I took these and that was it...... surely some thing recording should not stop ANY file deletion regardless of whether its in the 'quick menu' by pressing OK or via the file manager ( note its greyed out ).

PS Just because the first image is a failed recording doesnt mean it does not do the same on the others..... its just the one I happened to highlight when I took the photo.

When the box is not busy recording, in the file manager the red button can delete a recording or a complete folder with recordings in.

Automan.
