seriously? they were a phenomenon. they entered the music scene at the top. the only way was down unfortunately. from a critical point of view, you could say it was underrated. although, it was just a pop record.

where as the with the other persona's i could.

however, did think she was a better singer than at least two of the others. so i was still hoping for better solo material from her.

i know you are a fan of emma`s and i thought you might appreciate this. it is a nice version of a classic!

as for mel c. i`m still not moved by her new single. i do agree that the image is more feminine. i`m sure i read somewhere that she regretted all those tattoos and was having laser surgery to remove them? that clearly hasn't happened.

i have to say though, it was brave of the record company to release `goin` down` as the first single. i can see why it didn't do better. although, i have to admit i love it!”

Yes - Never really got into Mel B's music, I must say. I liked 'Feel so Good' but that's about it. Thought her first single with Missy was just her cashing in on the Scary Spice act rather than showing any sign of 'talent' as a solo act. And I'm not really into R&B generally speaking. Definitely into Soul and to a certain extent nu-Soul.

I agree about Emma's Baby act. I could relate to Geri and in some odd ways to Mel B but Emma was one of my favorites because she seemed to balance it out being a bit more 'measured' compared to the other Three while Victoria's frosty attitude just annoyed me at times. Also, I really liked Emma's vocals within the group. I really hope she had done much better with her solo material but in a way I'm not surprised. She can definitely carry a song on her own and I like the direction she took - well not with her third - but it seems that the sound was bigger than her on each occasion...
As for Mel C, she did say that indeed about her tattoos but she clearly had a second thought. Good on her! I'm sure it'll take you a few more listen before you start to warm to it

Yeaaah!!!! - Thanks, that's very appreciatedIt's a very nice version of a classic indeed and always thought she owned 2 become 1.

i agree about her voice getting lost in the music on her solo work. which was a huge oversight when you think about it.

`feel`s do good` was a good song. i think it was kind of obvious she would go down the rnb route. which may have bored people. geri apparently cited that has one of the reasons she intended to leave the group. she said she was not happy on their concept for the third album. whether that was wise on her part. or something she thought would have been clever to say after `forever` didn't do so well. i really don't know.

it is funny. i also thought her vocals were particularly good on the spice girls original. another song i thought this was on `holler`. i don't know why, i cant put my finger on it.

I thought as well that on Holler her vocals stood out. She appeared very confident quite fierce on the track and the video and it suited her well. Funny enough, thought she was the only who seemed not to put on an act on the song, if you see what I mean?.

i do see what you mean. she looked and sounded at easy with the music and visuals. ultimately it was a risk that just didn't pay off.

Definitely feels like something Geri would say to piss the girls off because 'Forever' didn't do so well...And indeed there was nothing surprising about Mel B's direction for her solo career but I was one of those who thought it was just to obvious and quite boring...Like Emma in a way, the genre was bigger than her and she just sounded bland her own solo efforts...

it does sound like typical geri. although, i will say she never went down that genre. she was not a fan of rnb at all. she cited that rnb music was mere tracks. she couldn't apparently, bear the thought of the spice girls doing that kind of music.

although, like i said i wouldn't put it past her to have a sly dig!

Interesting. Some of their album tracks are quite rnb-infused though? Say You'll Be There has definitely this little rnb vibe. But I'm not surprised about her not liking rnb - that wouldn't suit her personality and/or voice.

Well, I'll assume the whole idea was to distance themselves from their crazy image and show how credible of an act they were but it fired back at them! And instead of they sensing the message they can do better without her it kind of gave the (wrong?) impression Geri was the heart and soul of the Spice Girls.

no i doubt it would have suited her. i never attended the reunion tour. i cant remember why, i wish i had to be honest. although, from what i have seen on youtube. she doesn't perform `holler` with the group.

it was interesting that all the others did i a solo song within the show apart from victoria.

No she doesn't - she actually leaves the stage towards the end of Viva Forever. Can't remember if it was in the documentary or in a video-diary or something but she explained how the staging of Viva Forever was quite symbolic, dealing with her leaving the band...Can't remember either why but didn't see the reunion and from what I saw on youtube I wish it would have been shown on Telly at least!

And indeed, it was interesting the fact Victoria didn't sing any of her solo material and instead was doing some posing...Was she mocking the public image media gave her?

god knows what she was doing. i was disappointed with the reports that she was to blame for the tour ending the way it did. apparently she has even given the other girls her `blessing` to go on without her.

it seems it was ok when geri got all the bad press. when geri returned after a more successful solo attempt. it seems like the worm turned. i`m not sure that this didn't sat well with vb.

It certainly didn't. And despite her successful foray into fashion, she's still getting bad press on any occasions the press can creates. Look how they criticised for not smiling at the Royal Wedding...

she does have a charmed life. with opportunities like being able to attend the royal wedding. having a successful fashion career and her a list lifestyle in america. it is little wonder why she is the least likely to want to return to the group.

she is a lucky woman!

I like some of the songs on their Spice album but overall I found it a bit boring. Spiceworld, however, I think is a brilliant album, full of really catchy classic pop songs I still love to this day. The least said about their 3rd album the better, as far as I'm concerned, lol. Not very keen on their comeback single. Would have liked to hear some more new stuff from them though.

As for their solo stuff, Melanie C is by far my favourite. I have all her albums and most of her singles. Reason is my favourite album of hers and I can't wait for her new one. Loving the new songs heard so far.

I liked a lot of Emma's stuff, especially Free Me and Maybe. I love that 60's sound.

Never really keen on Melanie B's solo stuff (nor her voice) - just a bit too boring for me.

Same with Geri on the whole. Could never stand her singing, although I like her personality. Some of her songs I quite like, especially Look At Me and Mi Chico Latino, but that voice, arrrrrrgh, awful! Lol.

As for Victoria, I actually like her voice. Not an overly strong voice, sure, but the quality/tone of it is really nice. I just think she had some really poor material. If only she'd had better songs I think she'd have done a lot better, music wise. Shame.

But anyway, The Spice Girls were certainly a real phenomenon and it's a shame they didn't carry on a while longer, ditched the awful bland r'n'b style stuff they did on their 3rd album and had released at least 1 more really good catchy pop album before they split!

I met the group in 1996, just before Say You'll Be There came out. They were all really sweet and friendly and posed for pics for me. It was a fun few minutes!

thanks for sharing the memories! i would have loved to have met them at that stage. i cant say that i completely agreed with everything you wrote. however, that is just personal taste.

although i have to say your critique of their albums, would be in line with what i would have said.

I still listen to them now, and went to the reunion tour. They hold fond memories of me growing up, and now I follow their solo careers especially Melanie C.

She is and she obviously worked hard for it besides being there at the right at the right time!

Lucky you! Was that as good as it seems to look on when watching the live footage on youtube?

Melanie C is having an interesting solo career indeed. I found that quite fascinating how she grew in similar sound through her last three albums after her debut which is so different from the mature sound she has now.

And I agree with you Spaceygal about Emma, her second album is a little gem in my opinion.

Yes - Both - the career change and the fact she's hugely successful with it - don't surprise me either. But she definitely made sure she was where she needed to be to meet the right people that will get her there. Not undermining her ability, if anything behind the posh facade there seems to be a very clever (business)woman.

there is no doubting she is much richer than the other girls. she is very `brand` aware. quite sharp to be fair.
