How much meowing?

Is it normal for cats to meow loads?
My girl (I year old) seems to wail a heck of a lot. She seems perfectly healthy, and not in any discomfort.
She meows just doing things like walking about outside, coming indoors. And I get meowed at without apparent reason a lot.

My girl put me in mind of Jimmy Savile tonight with the meowing.

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but I just wonder if lots of cats are like this.

Some are silent some are noisy.

I have two and one was silent for a long time she only 'squeaks' now because it gets more attention.

He on the other hand delights in meowing to say
-I want food
-I want out
-I want attention
-I had nightmare
-I just took this huge dump come and look!
-Nothing...just want to meaow for no reason

I have three cats, mum, dad and one daughter I kept.

Mum almost NEVER meows, except very occasionally when I am getting food ready for them.

Dad just seems to meow for any reason, sits on the floor in front of me and meows at me - I tell him' I can't speak cat' but he doesn't listen.

Daughter has inherited Dad's penchant for meowing lots, but it is normally when she is playing or running around.

As has been said, some are quiet and others are noisy - just like people LOL..

An obvious question:

Is she neutered?

LOL! Sounds just like my little one. This one meows a lot as well when she needs to do a number two. I tell her just to get on with it and stop crying, lol.

My cat often just stands in front of me, stares right at me and meows.

She is neutered. She was neutered a few months ago. It doesn't seem to have affected how much noise she makes.

Churps?! That sounds like a cute noise.
The wailing of my cat goes right through my head sometimes. Especially when I'm trying to think and she's going on.

Thank you guys for your replies! I wasn't worried that my cat was ill or anything, but I have wondered if the amount on noise she makes is normal. Thanks to your responses, I now know that my cat is far from unique.

Funny thing is, my cat is quiet in the night, even if she is walking around. For that I am thankful (she sleeps with me).

I have a super talkative Maine Coon, he never shuts up. Meowing, crooning or purring the whole time virtually. Especially in the 'dump' scenario, he always lets us know he's off out to do one, and his pride in a job well done knows no bounds.

Oh, I like that description - "impossible princess" exactly describes my girl too. Precious little madam that she is.
Er...sings?

Mine, a usually quiet and dignified boy, goes through fits and starts of meowing. I honestly don't know why he does this some times more than others. I think cats are just as prone to moods as humans.

I honestly don't know about your cat though. Hopefully it's just a phase as too much of it can be as irritating as a dog's unwarranted barking.

I think my cat does meow more or less depending on her mood. Some days she doesn't make much noise, but then others there's loads of meowing all day.

Oh...I don't think it's a phase with my girl. She's a year old and has been like this since being very young.

Don't worry, all cats are different (like humans are!).

My little girl wails like nobody's business... After eating, after using her tray, coming in from the garden, when she goes upstairs, when she comes downstairs etc etc.

I think quite often it's just her asking where I am (when I show myself she quietens down). Other times it's just reminding me that she's there, or sometimes demanding attention.

The noise she makes is ridiculously loud! I often wonder if the neighbours think I'm swinging her round by her tail! It can be so loud that I miss what they're saying on the telly!

It used to be more of a howl. But it's turned more screechy than that now.

I think she's just a bit odd and noisy. But I wouldn't have her any other way.

Out of my 5 cats, 3 of them are very talkative. And one in particular has a tendency to practice her opera singing on the landing at 3am!!!

A friend told me cats who don't make much noise have been taken away from their mums too early -any idea if there's any truth in that?

I have a Tonkinese that like to chat, you can talk to her and she will meow right back at you. My other moggy just sort of squeaks every now and again when he wants attention and makes a sort of 'pruup pruup' noise.

jojo01 - wow, your girl must be loud to drown out the tv! My cat isn't really loud. And she doesn't howl.
You mention your cat quietens when you show yourself. I'd say it's the opposite with my one. She tends to make more noise when she's not alone.

chaoticspirit - oh my goodness, that must be troublesome at 3am! My one hardly makes a noise in the night, I'm happy to say.

Shelistar - prup pruup - I'd like to hear that. It sounds like an endearing noise.

Ben Etchells - lol. Was your cat very talkative during his recent photoshoot?

For all those with "chattycats" I bet that you've all reacted & given attention to your cats when they talk to you so that they've now learned that this is a great way to get your attention (& I'm as guilty as everyone else!!).

Cats are not really very great vocal communicators with each other ~ it's not their primary means of communication other than the prruup greeting noise, or during aggressive behaviour to warn other cats off. So when they "chat" to us it is usually learned behaviour rather than natural cat behaviour. But it can be dead cute or very annoying, depending on how you view it ~ the "opera singing" at 3.00 am would certainly not be something that I'd encourage!

My cat's a Bengal, she makes a constant racket, perfectly capable of holding a high volume meowing conversation for minutes on end, with herself.

There could be something in that, when I first got my Delilah, she was about 8 weeks, but had been in a pet store already for I don't know how long. She is silent almost all the time (but she has such a sweet voice) and after initially being invredibly scared of me for the first four hours, she has since then been INCREDIBLY dependent on me. She even would not have her seciond kitten and the rest in that litter without me being there with her - which is very unusual in cats.
She is always at my side and on my shoulders/lap etc.
Something made her that way I believe.
As I said earlier my other two are very vocal, and the youngest, May, is a very very vocal one, always chirping and singing and meows when she does EVERYTHING - litter tray, playing, talking to her daddy (Sammy) etc.

So Sweet.

Put chili powder down where they crap, they usually come back and sniff about where they went before and a nose full of chili would put them off coming in again!

wilhemina - ha, I think you have a point. My cat knows she'll get my attention if she meows a lot, even if it's negative attention (me telling her to shut up).

LOL! My cat tends to meow when you catch her eye.
I don't remember my cat being this noisy when she was very young though. How old was your cat when you got her? (If you don't mind me being nosy).

Must be because he's busy feeling like a movie star.

I notice a couple of you mention your breed of cat - I understand some breeds tend to be more talkative than others; is this right?

And also with the mention of how quieter cats were maybe taken away from their mums too early, and BigBHM talking about their quiet cat being very dependent on them, I'm wondering -
do quiet cats tend to be more nervous than talky cats?
My girl is very confident. Lets even people she's only just met pick her up. She also seems quite fearless generally (not too bothered by thunder or fireworks, and I saw her chase a cat twice her size out of the garden a while back.)
