There's not enough information in your post to give you any specific help. We need make & model numbers - the most important one being the 5.1 speakers. You could also tell us what you have tried so far to get surround sound.

Is this some kind of cheap 5.1 speaker system with a bunch of amplifiers built into the sub that powers the other speakers? Or is it a proper 5.1 system?
If the speaker system has digital audio connections of some sort and it has the necessary Dolby Digital and/or DTS decoders then it might support true surround sound. However if all it has are a bunch of analogue inputs for the front/rear left/right and centre and sub signals then it can only do surround sound with an external decoder. Similarly you will need digital outputs from the other bits of kit to feed the speakers surround signals. Using just the left/right analogue phono outputs from the TV won't give you that. As posted above without specific makes and models that is a detailed as we can get. |

5.1 speakers
the system is a cheap asda 5.1(sp550 home theatre system), all connections go into the base unit with aux, fl/fr, cen/sw, sl/sr inputs, fr, fl, sr, sl & cen outputs, connected to tv, but the install manual suggest "such as dvd player" any help would be appreciated.

From what you have posted the system has no decoders for the various surround sound formats. Nor it appears any digital audio inputs. As such it will be totally useless with your Sky box. That just outputs the "raw" undecoded surround signal on it's digital output.
The DVD player might have built in decoders and the necessary analogue outputs on the back. But I doubt it. Like the Sky box it is far more likely to have a digital audio output that just sends the raw signal to the surround decoder. Since your system does not appear to have either digital connections nor any form of surround sound decoder then you are a bit stuffed. You would need some form of external surround sound decoder box with analogue audio outputs. |

Connection Setup
On myconnection diagram, i have the 4 double outputs that show a further connection to "5.1 ch dvd player or other apparatus" would there have to be the same 4 double inputs on the apparatus to connect? thanks all for help!

Your system is incapable of decoding the various digital surround sound formats that exist on DVD, Blu-Ray or even Satellite TV. Therefore whatever you want to use it with will have to do the decoding for you.
This means that whatever source equipment you use has to have built in decoder circuits and the necessary audio outputs for Front Left, Front Right, Rear Left, Rear Right, Centre and Sub. These are most likely to be presented on phono sockets much like the ones on the back of the sub in your system. So you connect the external equipment Front Left to the speaker Front Left and so on. The AUX input on the sub can take a stereo input and feed that to some or maybe even all the speakers (I don't know the system intimately and there is very little information about it available online). But it won't be surround sound in the real definition of the term. You are far more likely to find just stereo left and right analogue audio outputs on the various bits of kit than a full six way 5.1 surround sound set of outputs. I believe the Sky box only does stereo analogue and I know of many DVD players that also only do stereo analogue. |

I agree with Chris - unless the external equipment connected has 5.1 multichannel inputs you will not get 5.1 surround sound.
Sky HD does not have these connections, the only way to get 5.1 from Sky is via optical/coaxial. Depending on their spec, DVD players can sometimes come with multichannel outputs, connecting this way to a compatible amp/receiver will give you 5.1. Will all due respect, your system is very basic and will not do what you are asking of it, no onboard decoders, so no surround sound with the equipment you have connected I'm afraid. New equipment needed if you want 5.1 - If funds are low have a look on Ebay, you'll be able to pick up something that will do the job for around £50. One here going for £30 at the moment. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Denon-AVR-3300...d=p3286.c0.m14 Ebay will be a good source for speakers too. |

there is such a device...
Technics SH-AC300 or Technics SH-AC500. these are standalone decoders only. they have 1 optical and one coaxial (or 2 optical and 2 Coax if AC500). but have the 5.1 analogue out thats F L/R R L/R C and SW. The SH-AC300 does Dolby Digital and Pro Logic., and the SH-AC500 does DTS as well as Dolby Digital and Pro Logic. No longer manufactured im afraid; but if you spot one on ebay then that would do the trick. however my advice and as stated by others here is to just get a new amp + speakers. i have the technics SH-AC300 but also have a fully blown Sherwood 6106R amp that also does DTS. unlike a cheap system this one has many configuration options one being automatic switching between DTS, Dolby Digital and Pro logic. so when watching sky it will mainly be in pro logic except for the premium channels which will do Dolby digital. a proper amp will be able to detect all this. The sherwood I got for £35. but if you do look for an amp in the budget range. try and grab one that also does DTS-ES Discrete and Dolby Digital EX. since then you'll have a 6.1 system suitable for films. yet still does 5.1 over sky. hope this helps

Splitting the speakers
Can i put 2 speakers on 1 phono connection or will the sub not handle this?
