Not sure if it has been mentioned, but the first X Factor live show is 10th October as usual. It means there will be, as predicted, just 5 auditions episodes rather than 6.
Will they air some on a Sunday as well though before the live shows start - it's unlike ITV to actually cut-back on something when they can flog it to death instead?

They should strip it 6 days a week like a certain z list celeb hoofing contest

The number of hours aired will be pretty much the same as the past few years even though it will be over 17 weeks instead of 18. Even though there is one less auditions show, the ones that are on are longer to make up for it.

The bootcamp and judges houses shows have been split over Saturday and Sunday for 2 years now, IIRC. They have been two parters since 2005, originally airing 2 separate shows on Saturday.

I've got the F1 figure from Sunday: 4.09m (36.4%)

It's on the lower side of the F1 figures so far this year, but considering it is the most boring race of the year, it is on the whole a good rating.

It was the 5th highest rated programme for BBC One on Sunday behind the main two BBC News bulletins, Rivers & Countryfile.

On a side note, the percentage share is lower than usual, a quick calculation shows over 11 million people were watching TV on Sunday afternoon, presumably more watching ITV1 and Sky Sports 1 due to The X Factor repeat and The Ashes.

BTW, I'm expecting Saturday's X Factor figure to actually be down - reason is there is Arsenal vs Man United on Sky Sports, which could bring in 2/3m on Saturday peaktime.

It's a 5.15pm kick off though. Should be all over by 7ish, so shouldn't be much overlap.

No way are ITV going to cut the number of episodes in one of their biggest ratings winners! This is how it'll work.

First live results show on 11th October

2 weeks of Sunday night Boot Camp/Judges' houses programmes like last year run on 27th Sept and 4th Oct.

Joanna Lumley: Catwoman and Miss Marple start Sunday 6th Sept. Catwoman is a 2-parter and others have posted on this thread that ITV are only showing 2 Marples just now so that'll be 6th and 13th Sept.

This leaves 20th Sept for audition show #6, which makes sense because that's the first weekend of Strictly.

If they've cut the auditions down to 5 programmes then they've effectively replaced an X Factor show with its 10m+ audience with a repeat of King Kong taking 2.36m over 3 and a half hours of peak-viewing.

An ITV/Five merger would have been attractive a few years ago as the merged company would have been able to compete on a level playing field with the BBC, both having 2 analogue channels.

But with digital TV switchover happening soon, Five turning into a type of ITV2 channel wouldn't be much more benefit than ITV2 as it is.

The audition shows are 15 minutes longer this year, so if they air 5 of them, the auditions are still on air 15 minutes longer than last year despite being on a week less.

Motorway Cops seem to be an alluring filler when nothing of note is on, so BBC1 will be content with last night's performance. ITV1 wil be hoping The Fixer gives the schedule a boost next week, but I can't see it getting much above 4m myself - though if it does succeed at that, then that's double what The Duchess on the Estate achieved.

It's a shame about Grimefighters, but against EastEnders and with a poor lead out I guess it did ok with what it got. Car Crime is holding up ok, though Send in the Dogs was doing better in the slot. Why ITV mucked about with that is anyone's guess.

Holby City still performing striongly, unlike Big Brother. It's no wonder Channel 4 want to ditch the show when Endemol contrive to get rid of the more entertaining Housemates!

The ITV share yesterday was only 15.5%, while BBC One's was 19.2%. What are the chances of BBC One's repeat of The 39 Steps beating the footie?

Wednesday 26th August 2009 - Soap Ratings
Emmerdale - 6.45m (33.9%)
Doctors - 1.74m (22.6%)
Neighbours - 1.47m (11%) [R: 246k (1.4%)]
Hollyoaks: 1.39m (7.7%) [FL: 477k (2.8%)]

I was thinking of it as an ITV acquisition - a regular 2m+ guaranteed weekday audience will outrate some of the prime-time flops ITV have had of late, and the endless associated shows and live streams seem ideal for ITV2.

I only wonder if BB might just be a bit too highbrow for ITV?
I think that dedicating an hour slot every day for 13 weeks is too much for ITV1 and BBC1, it could work in maybe three 45-1 hour slots across the week, maybe Monday, Wednesday and Friday (maybe an hour and a half for an eviction?), it would bring a safety net to ITV.

Another ITV dating flop on the way: http://www.broadcastnow.co.uk/news/b...004885.article

ITV has tasked The X Factor producer Talkback Thames with making the successor to Blind Date - speed-dating format Take Me Out.

The glossy primetime show is director of entertainment and comedy Elaine Bedell’s most significant commission since joining ITV and has been ordered for an initial 8 x 60-minute run. It is in pre-production now and will TX next year.

Blind Date was once huge in the ratings. If they do get the format right, it will get big ratings.

New ITV drama lined up. A period drama which will probably rate well:

Julian Fellowes, the Oscar-winning writer of Gosford Park, is writing a seven-part Edwardian country house drama for ITV1.

Whitechapel indie Carnival Films has been commissioned to make the 1912-set Downton Abbey, and the script will move into pre-production this autumn.

The show’s concept has echoes of 1970s ITV drama Upstairs, Downstairs, and will focus on the relationship between the Crawley family, who own the Downton estate, and their staff, who live and work at the house. While some are loyal and committed to the family, others try to improve their status, find love and follow adventure.

The series, which was commissioned by director of drama Laura Mackie and director of television, channels and online Peter Fincham, will begin with a 90-minute first episode, with the subsequent six episodes running for 60 minutes.

Fellowes recently wrote the critically acclaimed film, The Young Victoria, and won an Oscar for best original screenplay for Gosford Park in 2001.

He said: “There is no narrative base that can provide members of every level of society, sleeping under a single roof, more believably than a great house before the First War.”

Mackie added: “This is a series of real scale and ambition that explores the complicated relationships between masters and servants during a brilliantly vivid period of British history”.

It looks good to say the least - those types of dramas if done properly can pull in good ratings. Let's hope it's not put on the shelf.

Good night for all the channels are guess - not sure if ITV will be happy with that Champions League figure though.

A quick calculation BTW shows that 23 million were watching TV in the 9pm - that is pretty high considering the time of year it is, although the weather was rather crap yesterday.

It could hop between 8pm and 9pm from Monday-Friday, and could even go at 10pm on weekends. Evictions would be unchanged to now- 9pm-10pm then 10.35pm-11.05pm after the news. If it has to go out at 8pm they could show Big Brother: After Dark at 10.35pm with things that couldn't make the highlights. Last nights given a slight boost with the coverage. Arsenal match didn't rate as well as I expected, and Dragon's Den a lot better than I thought.

A tighter match would of averaged more then that. Arsenal killed of the tie reasonably early last night.

Dragons Den benefited from ITV showing football.

Very good night for BBC2 last night, and i'm glad that Shooting Stars made a strong comeback, but Dragon's Den figure is great!

D.M.N. - I think it would be worth keeping a track record of ITV's ratings (ie programme averages) for all 18 of its Champions League games this season (including the Super Cup game).

So far they've got 1.5m last week, 4.3m this week and we know another bad figure is coming on Friday.

ITV is paying £3m per game (£53m for 18 games). I know it gets outstanding ratings for the Final and very good ones once the knock-out stage starts in February. But if the ratings for the Group games are only average then that really pulls down the average for the whole contract.

It would be very interesting to see the average for all 18 games this season.

Yeah, it'd probably be a good idea to do an average for each stage, then an overall average. So, so far:

UEFA Champions League - Averages
- Play-Off Stage: 2.885m (2 games)
- Super-Cup: (1 game)
- Group Stage: (6 games)
- First Knockout Round: (4 games)
- Quarter-Finals: (2 games)
- Semi-Finals: (2 games)
- Final: (1 game)

Total Average: 2.885m (2 games)

BTW, that totals 17 games. Where does the extra game come from?
Good analysis!

The extra game is the Super Cup game tomorrow. I know this is a separate competition but it is part of ITV's contract (ie ITV are paying £53m for the 18 games) so it should be included in the ratings analysis.

EDIT: You beat me to it!

The 39 Steps did well considering it was a repeat showing. I watched it last night as I missed it at Christmas and it was an enjoyable 90 minutes of TV.
