I dont think ITV need O'Grady that much. He is too much trouble & no doubt will have another hissy fit and go off running to the papers again sooner or later

The department a show comes from doesn't make that much difference, to be honest - The Big Breakfast for its first few years used to be the responsibility of Channel Four's Head of Sport as they couldn't find another department to put it in. So although The One Show is the responsibility of the Head of Daytime, it's more likely to be because it uses the resources of factual, light entertainment, news, features and most other departments so no one department can take responsibility.

Joan Does Glamour flopped like how most of us expected. Good rating for Holby City and Around The World In 80 Days did quite well. Five did better than usual at 8pm, but that CSI Miami rating looks quite low. Not sure why it's down from the usual 2-3m.

CSI: Miami has been shedding a lot of viewers. I guess people have fallen out of love with it.

Maybe it jumped the shark.

Looks like DS's figures for Five are wrong. They were actually:

20:00- Nature Shock: 1.7m (8%)
21:00- CSI Miami: 2.6m (11.8%)
22:00- CSI NY: 1.5m (9.1%)
23:00- CSI: 800,000 (9.7%)

So CSI: Miami actually rated quite well, higher than ITV1.

A few more ratings from yesterday:

22:00- Later with Jules Holland (BBC2): 730,000 (3.9%)
22:35- Dishing the Dirt (ITV1): 1.6m

MG says that Paul O'Grady's show is likely to be 8-12 episodes long: http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2009...y-itv-chatshow

£4m per year for that does seem a lot, even including programme budget. That must be an over-exaggerated figure. I can't imagine ITV paying him that much.

Eek. Even Living wouldn't stoop that low.

Sky1's programme ideas continue to scrape the barrel. Hello Goodbye, Noel's HQ, Don't Forget The Lyrics, Nothing But The Truth. And now this latest turd. The list of second-rate programming they serve up to their customers is endless.

Glad I'm not paying to watch tripe like that

It really does seem to be lacking in direction. It has some of the very best US imports which would be a great base from which to build an image of quality drama. And its own attempts at drama have been well received. But then it goes off making nonsense dance rip-offs and daytime shows. They need to make their mind up about what they want to be.

I agree that they have some of the best US imports. However, if Sky1 did not exist, they would almost certainly be shown elsewhere, possibly FTA in some cases. So if Sky1 cannot serve up meaningful homegrown programming of its own, it isn't really serving much of a purpose to the viewer.

Apart from 1 Ross Kemp series a year and 1 made for TV movie each Easter, I'm struggling to think of any other worthwhile contributions Sky1 has made to British television recently. It really hasn't achieved much at all for a channel that has been running for so many years and is supposedly Sky Digital's flagship channel, and has certainly never produced anything of HBO calibre.

I quite agree - they seem to lurch from the sublime to the ridiculous. "British HBO" one minute - celebrity junk ITV2 wouldn't touch with a bargepole the next. Surely creating premium content to attract subscribers to their platform is a better model for them. Looking at their yearly budget (£130m) in comparison to others such as ITV2, E4, or BBC Three - it's difficult to imagine that they make a profit out of advertising - so it must be a loss leader anyway.

Nothing much to write home about on Tuesday night once again. Joan does Glamour flopped (we could have told them that before they commissioned it ) and Around the World did OK - I was expecting the 4m region similar to ITV's travelogues. They'll be hoping it doesn't drop any more though.

This could be wildly wrong but...

An article in Media Guardian in May said that the BGT semi-finals were taking about £1.86m an hour (about £78,000 per 30 second spot).

The X Factor is pretty close to the semi-final ratings. BGT had a semi-final average of 12.7m, X Factor (over 3 hours) averaged 11.9m. So say £70,000 for a 30 second spot. That's £1.68m an hour or £5.04m for the 3 hours.

Carphone Warehouse pays £7m a year (about £180k an hour) so this weekend would be worth about £540,000 of that. Which takes the total to about £5.6m before other revenues from Xtra Factor, voting, competitions and online.

If the weekend cost £1.5m, then ITV could have been making a profit of about £4m or more (before promotion and admin costs). As I said, this could be wrong, because that seems massive.

I wouldn't be surprised. This sort of 'event TV' is where ITV seem to make all their profits these days. The rest of the schedule is mostly damage limitation.

I suppose you would probably have to factor in the contract costs of Cowell, Cole. etc. which I don't think would be included in the production costs as they're ITV "golden handcuffs" deals. But still, its a huge profit.

Last season of X Factor cost £20m - this season will cost more, but the ROI is still going to be huge

Around the World in 80 Days did well as did The Force although police docs do seem to perform well, CSI: Miami was up and Nature Shock did very well and is a proven strand for Five and Joan Does Glamour unsurprisenly flopped.

FlashForward timeshifted well although I wonder if it is in the top five highest rated show for Five this year or just outside it.

I'm pretty sure the 'cost per episode' will include money spent on talent, even those in golden handcuff deals.

These deals that are worth "£20m" or "£30m" are actually estimates. The contract simply says something like they will be paid X per episode of X show. If they are saying £20m for example, it would be a rough estimate based on how many episodes there were likely to be.

Wasn't there a rumour a few months ago about ITV trying to make Friday's @ 9pm into an entertainment block?

Only standout rating for me last night was Holby City which seems a few hundred thousand up on usual. Joan Does Glamour flopped - but really, it was expected.

ITV has confirmed their Week 44 (24th-30th October) schedule on the Press site.

The X Factor Results are back at 8pm, so the 7:45pm start for this Sunday must be just a one off. I'm glad about that.

Only other noteable thing is that there's an extra episode of Coronation Street on Wednesday 28th at 7:30pm, followed by a new episode of Midsomer Murders.

Yeah, it's at number 4:

4.21m - The Mentalist
4.10m - FlashForward
