Extremely disappointing for Wuthering. I expected at least 6m. Though I do expect it to increase to at least 4.5m tonight with the Corrie lead in. The only upside is that it won its slot and that the Lewis repeats are performing great for ITV1 and doing as well as new episodes of The Royal/Heartbeat and the factual shows.
Very poor for BB considering it is entering its final week, but on FIVE Titanic did great to hold 1.6m for nearly 4 hours and to peak at over 2m.

Holy shit at the low ratings for WH. We'll definitely be seeing UK drama less and less on ITV in the future, no doubt about it.

Perhaps Wuthering Heights might have performed better as three hour long episodes, scheduled weekly ala Whitechapel etc. earlier in the year. Nobody should be too surprised though - traditionally that sort of thing usually finds a better audience on the BBC than it does with ITV.

Not in the "overnight" ratings.
However, "official" ratings are released a week on Wednesday which will include people who recorded the show and watched it within 7 days.
Nearly 22 million were watching TV last night, so we can't at all attribute the poor ratings to Bank Holiday weekend. If I'm to be totally honest, I expected at least 5m for Becoming Jane and 6m for Wuthering Heights. With all programmes not running to the "standard hour" it's hard to compare. So let's see, based on breakdowns what the main 5 averaged between 9pm and 10pm:
ITV1: 04.00m (18.69%)
BBC One: 03.11m (14.52%)
Five: 01.89m (08.83%)
Channel 4: 01.79m (08.35%)
BBC Two: 01.20m (05.59%)
That means, in the 9pm hour last night, 44% were watching Multichannel. Considering there were good shows on terrestrial last night, I find that figure surprising.

I think part of this is that ITV have made themselves into soap/reality channel and people just dont expect them to produce stuff like WH anymore. Ok there are endless detective dramas but period stuff is very much seen as with the BBC these days.

They do get counted if they are watched before the "overnights" are collected. So, if someone recorded WH and started watching it at, say, 1030pm and FFed the ads so they could finish by, say, 1130pm, they would still get counted in the overnights under the "VOSDAL" measurement...

It was a similar situation for BBC about 10 years ago. They only had a reputation for period drama and little else. Then they concocted the "The ONE for Drama" strapline and commissioned stuff like "Silent Witness", "Waking the Dead" and "Spooks". So, if ITV want to be in the "period drama" game, they have to stick with the genre and rather than only risking just over 2hours of content on a story that deserves (and needs) twice that, they have to make "Sunday Night Treats" and run them continually until people get the message.
Unfortunately, with finances the way they are, successes like TXF and BGT mean that things like WH don't get the audiences they deserve.

The BBC One schedule for this week was signed off hours before the ITV1 schedule.
I notice quite a few people commenting about Lewis doing well in the ratings as if it were a good thing. It is not - this is a repeat on at primetime Sunday and any relative success will just encourage more of the same.
I'm really surprised only 4 million watched Wuthering Heights. With the amount of promotion ITV gave the show, I thought it would have definitely got over 5m.
Only 4.1m tuned in at the start with any interest to watch the show. The Lewis repeat did well, but the lead-in for WH was nothing compared to what it would have once been. Just last year on the same Bank Holiday, a temporary Corrie got 6.3m and Heartbeat got 6.4m, which provided a good lead-in for the 9pm drama.
Now, they've hardly got anything on Sunday to give those sorts of lead-ins for 9pm shows (apart from DOI and TXF). It's disappointing because the rating for WH only increases the chances of ITV moving away from drama as it did cost £1 million per hour!

Again, it's an example of the crazy 'logic' of schedulers - with there being no Corrie on Friday, ITV could have moved the missing episodes to Sunday as a way of propping up the schedules, thereby guaranteeing at least 6 million and a decent lead-in for WH.
Exactly. Biggest mistake Michael Grade made at ITV was tearing up a very successful Sunday schedule which rated very well and consistently won the night for ITV.

ITV addressing the problem with Reality TV shows although Dancing On Ice and X Factor don't run for the whole year.

Definitely, ITV should have put the missing Corrie yesterday. They did it last year, so I would have thought they would have done it again. Something like:
18:00 Lewis, 20:00 Corrie, 21:00 Wuthering Heights
For sure, Corrie wouldn't get its usual ~8m and probably would have been down to 6m. But it still would have provided Wuthering Heights with a really decent lead-in to have a chance of getting a better rating. After all, it has been billed as one of ITV's "blockbuster dramas" this season along with Collision.
Never mind, maybe it'll rate better tonight with Corrie right before it.
OMG WH 4 million? it had an all star cast that should have pulled in at least 8 or 9 million. If it was on the BBC it would have got that.

On the other hand, Lewis is very expensive to make and quite possibly doesn't cover its cost on first run. It certainly won't be making the profit that X Factor can. One of the incentives for ITV to make more drama is that there is more value in repeats and that in time, the cost will be made up. So while it might encourage repeats, when drama costs 50% more than shows like X Factor and BGT for lower first run ratings, it needs to do something extra to encourage them to keep commissioning it.
Something tells me that if it gets 4m tonight as well then it will almost certainly be repeated sometime around December...
I'm surprised that Wuthering Heights and Becoming Jane didn't do that well but I guess the audiences did clash with WH coming out on top.
The Office Night did okay although the audience did slip as the night went on, Titanic did quite well for Five considering it was almost 4 hours long and built its audience throughout. It's on Fiver twice today and then Film4 are showing it in a few weeks so I guess they must jointly bought it with a couple of other films.
Will be interesting how Framed and part 2 of WH do tonight.

Isn't Lewis a co-production with WGBH Boston so I imagine the costs are split between the two and it is sold worldwide so ITV Studios are able to cover the cost through that and repeats on ITV1 and ITV3.
Per Media Guardian - Tony Ball now "favourite to take over at ITV .......... with director of TV Peter Fincham potentially moving to Channel 4"
If Ball takes over it must surely increase the chances of ITV being run on a proper, serious commercial basis. We could see huge changes over the next few years - ie more soaps, more reality, less (or no) drama, no more loss making sport, indeed all loss making shows being scrapped.

ITV are never going to make any non-crime drama if a repeat of Lewis can get more than Wuthering Heights, with all the hype it's had - though arguably no big stars. I didn't think WH was that great, but I am really sad to see it didn't do better.
