ITV needs to be careful that it's making dramas with broader appeal though. They chased that young audience last year with their new dramas and it, mostly, ended in disaster.

I've seent the series from the start and there's been a couple of puzzles repeated (the one where the guy had to bounce the ball off two blocks into a cylinder has been done before) but a lot of them were original IIRC. There's only three weeks left of the series I think (I guess it'll finish as You've Been Framed/TV Burp returns) so it hasn't got long now to become repetitive.

Same here. I hear that Married, Single, Other will be a new drama coming to ITV soon - early 2010 maybe? Apparently it will be similar to Cold Feet. Let's hope that is successful and sparks some more ideas for drama. I loved Peak Practice, Footballers Wives, Bad Girls and At Home With The Braithwaites back in the day.
ITV need to have a new successful slate of drama, in which they can have drama series that can return year on year for a 16 episode maximum run and be reliable, solid bankers when it comes to bringing in the ratings. 5 million + would be really decent. They have their crime dramas sorted, but most of what they show are three parters or one offs. They need to have some returning series in the mix.
Entertainment and reality is sorted for them, for the moment. They need to get their drama sorted and they need to let the general public know that the new drama they provide is of the very best quality, in order to get the viewers to tune in. Promotion on billboards, in cinemas etc would be a really brilliant start.
I think their attitude to drama at the moment isn't that great. It's as if they are slotting in dramas because they need to fill the airtime and they don't have that attitude towards shows like The X Factor, I don't think. Of course they need to fill the airtime, but ITV need to show they genuinely care for the dramas they show, then maybe viewers would be more inclined to watch. I think that could be partly why ratings for their new dramas are so poor, because ITV don't always show that they are proud of their drama offerings.
An example is The Fixer. Great drama but poorly promoted and it just seemed to be shoved in a Tuesday 9pm slot, as it "needs to be shown". Also, Blue Murder has meant to have been on air for a while now, but it seems ITV chop and change when they wished for it to air, without really a care or thought.

I dont think a network has to pay extra, the studio wont mind.
The only reason it doesnt happen more is that schedules are pencilled in over a year before and its hard to predict US schedules, plus you run the risk of catching up and having to hold back a week or two.
ITV for example would never do it because it would be impossible to work in. They need to know exactly how many episodes they are dealing with first and find a space.
It's easier for Five and Sky One to move things around because they have less original programming.

I think UK broadcasters can air US shows anytime after their original broadcast - the only reason we've had to wait over here is because of the frequent breaks that occur over there. It's an uncommon practice over on this side of the pond so we tend to wait until they can be shown uninterrupted. But of course with the impact of downloading UK broadcasters, starting with Sky, have been trying to decrease the gap (although it's only happened with a few shows and most of the time we still have to wait).
Of course Richard Woolfe was at Sky when they started airing Lost days after its US broadcast so this was obviously his decision in fast-tracking its broadcast over here - but that also means when it takes a break over there, it'll be taking a break over here as well.

Richard Woolfe, controller of Five has mentioned that they won't be commissioning any drama until the Recession eases although with the relaxation of Product Placement, it could come sooner but I think they are concentrating on signing up talent and commissioning entertainment and beefing up their US imports with stuff like FlashForward and NCIS LA although IMO their US drama slate is pretty good with solid performers like NCIS, The CSI Franchise and The Mentalist, I do wonder whether they should drop Law & Order Franchise or move it to Five USA because it does okay but isn't a priority to keep.

True, dramas like CSI and Bones do bring in a decent demo for a genre which is considered 'old' but it's shows like Lost, Desperate Housewives and Grey's Anatomy that draw in the desired demo. Even hit shows like The Mentalist and NCIS draw smaller 18-49s.
I think ITV are trying to find iconic detectives from literature to adapt to the screen to add to the likes of Lewis, Frost, Poirot, Midsomer and Marple with dramas like Above Suspicion, Hidden Depths etc

It depend on the show, I don't think Five would fasttrack CSI or The Mentalist because it would mean they would nothing to schedule for the rest of the year plus it would hurt ratings, CSI for example had to air two repeats last year due to the writer's strike and it damaged the ratings for the run.

Then again, what would they replace Law and Order with? Not more CSI, it'd run a risk of being over-saturated, and CBS only create so many episodes a year as it is!

I liked that strand. E4 is strengthening again also with lots of new shows cropping up all over the place. But perhaps shows like Veronica Mars are being underused considering the cult popularity of the show and the fact it was previously unseen to Freeview viewers?
It's a shame C4 Sales no longer provide a comprehensive roundup of the E4 ratings as it would be interesting to see how HIMYM is performing.
Also, I think you forgot Smallville from your list. Providing E4 still have the rights.

Yeah, there is that to consider as well.
Plus I can imagine Flash Forward being more popular with downloaders thanks to its serialised nature (much like Lost, Heroes and Desperate Housewives for example). Whereas CSI's episodes are stand-alone (as far as I'm aware) so it'd be easier for Five to hold off and air them at a more convenient point.

Could maybe be given a try out over the autumn when E4 won't have as many US imports on air? Or possibly a 6pm slot if they don't want to risk it in the heart of primetime?

I've been quite enjoying it and they have been plugging it like mad as well. I like E4 but my big complaint is how much they cut up their shows. HIMYM goes out at 8pm in the US, it's hardly a post watershed show. But if it does well, it's an obvious replacement for My Name Is Earl after TBBT.

I think so, although I'm not sure how much longer it will run for as The CW bumped it to Friday nights this year. I suppose it would have to go in at 10pm one night.

Will some things like regional news and Tonight not be subject to negotiations with OFCOM?
By the sounds of it, he's a no nonsense guy. I think the big lesson from Michael Grade was that ITV really does need to be run like a proper commercial business. The only thing that I wouldn't be too pleased about is 6 episodes of Corrie and that comes back to the consistency issue. They've just moved all the soaps for the second time since 2007, doing it again won't be a good thing and I think the more episodes are shown, the more viewers are going to lose track and lose interest.

Yes. But my guess is if he doesn't get 100% what he wants then he hands back the licences.
Then he can do anything he likes re the above list - ie ITV would just be subject to the same regulaions as Sky - eg ad minutes etc (though still subject to what OFT allow re CRR).

Why would daytime be "entirely bought in" when shows such as This Morning
a) make money
b) promote a lot of ITV peaktime shows?
Again regional news can be profitable if scaled back to say 5/6 regions (I know it wont be popular with people living in low density population areas who get lumped in with others living 200 miles away).
Thirdly there is a difference between short term profitability and longer term profitability. You can maximise profits for 1-3 years by over expoliting existing shows and cutting cost to the bone but it doesnt leave much to work on long term.
The sports agruement is interesting. Arguably neither BBC or ITV should be engaged in it (for different reasons), but without both then its basically a single buyer left - Sky. I think whether ITV stays in sport is linked in many ways to what the BBC decides to do re sport in the medium to long term.

1. Comedy - Benidorm isn't enough. I'd have had two 30 minute sitcoms to follow the X Factor on Sundays. They could be run for longer series, have great value in repeats and could attract younger viewers.
2. Contemporary Drama - They now have no Saturday night family drama. Most of their hits are crime drama's but they're all aimed at the middle aged and above perhaps with the exception of Law and Order: London. Sci-fi shows always create a buzz in the US and score well with young viewers. Lets see a Lost or a Flash Forward on ITV.
3. Factual Entertainment - They've got some solid crime based performers and some of the authored journeys do well. But they need a returning series or two.

Agree entirely with these. I'm actually trying to think of successful ITV comedies in the past few years, and I can't think of that many.
(Not sure you'd class Mumbai Calling as successful!)
A lot of it is due to poor scheduling. I mean, they've effectively wiped out two shows due to poor scheduling (Heartbeat and The Royal) and could possibly destroy a third as well due to poor scheduling (Marple).
Instead of having a 12-week long run, Heartbeat and The Royal was split right down which distillates the audience a lot.
Sounds like Paul O'Grady is about to leave Channel 4, as previously rumoured...

I doubt it though. Five doesn't need him - with Kaplinsky, Neighbours, Home and Away and Live from Studio Five they are already paying a lot of money for those slots and they cant really get out of any of those contracts - Neighbours is 10 years, Home and Away is life.
Also if Media Guardian were hinting about Five's big news and they knew something they would at least acknowledge Five as an option in the article, which they dont.

According to Broadcast, a further 640,000 (9.8%) tuned into the repeat of Derren Brown's show on Channel 4 at 23:35, with 102,000 (3%) tuning in on Channel 4+1 at 00:35, bringing a total figure of 5.5 million.
That repeat figure is impressive - I wonder if that's because of "word of mouth" via the internet spreading about the programme?
I really can't see it shredding half of that 5.5 million next week. I'd be surprised if it does.
