Officials for w/e 16/08/09 make very poor reading for both BBC1 and ITV1.

- BBC1 below 20% for the 3rd week in a row. The last 3 weeks are BBC1's 2nd, 3rd and 4th worst weeks ever.

- ITV1 overall share 15.2% - 2nd worst week ever.

Things should start improving for ITV1 with XF but Wed 18th was dire with football and it will be the same on Fri 27th. So will be interesting to see how strong the recovery is.

ITV's share for the week was just 15.2%, it's second worst ever. BBC1's share isn't great either, below 20% and one of its worst ever. BBC Ten O'Clock News on Thursday is rating very well, helped by the New Tricks lead-in.

Despite no more Emmerdale clashes, the Tuesday EastEnders episodes continue to rate very well. America's Got Talent finale pulls in the numbers for ITV2. We don't usually have ITV3 programmes in the chart, but ITV1's abysmal Saturday seems to have helped its digital channels out.

ITV1 officials for w/e 16/08/09 make extraordinary reading in that there are 12 programmes above 5.62m and then nothing else at all above 3.66m.

The 12 programmes are:

If anything now summed up ITV1's position, this list is it. Ratings for "fillers" are completely collapsing.

I think that describes ITV's position now. They are just praying for September to come round fast, with Doc Martin, The Fixer, Benidorm, among others returning.

If I'm to be honest, ITV's drama portfolio for the Winter looks much stronger than BBC's.

Just to say there are no officials for Sky Sports 1 which has made a mess of multi-channel ratings. Spurs v Liverpool which had a peak of 2m would have been top multi-channel programme by miles.

the top 10 repeats this pattern, BBC1 with 1/10 shows, a varierty of drama, sops, lifestyle and dosumentary as opposed to 2 soaps and soccer match.

Seems ITV competes just 2 days a week, Saturday with XFactor and Monday with soaps.

Well what fillers were there?

Saturday a 3.5 hour film
Friday - drama repeat
Thursday - The Bill up against New Tricks
Tuesday - burn off reality show
Monday - burn off drama

Other than Grimebusters and Countryfile, I dont know what people expect?

Not too surprised about Big Brother being cancelled after BB11. I expect ratings will see a slight rise though seeing as we are nearly into the final week of BB10 and this news has just been released.

I expect BB11 will also see a boost, compared to previous series as everyone will know it's the last one and will tune into see its death. I assume BB11 will just be members of the public again and not All Stars?

It will be interesting to see what Channel 4 come up with in the summer of 2011 to fill the void that BB leaves. I like the sound of it creating more dramas like Red Riding, but I am cynical over whether it will match the figures that BB was capable of. They have 13 weeks to fill over the summer, an hour of primetime a night - it's going to be tough but they do need to move on and come up with something more creative and "out there".

Will they try and make a different reality show to run night after night, similar to BB? or will they produce a series of shows of varying genres to air over different nights of the summer? Interesting times ahead.

The point is we're moving to a position where everything other than the 2 soaps, 4 reality shows and football amounts to a filler.

Whether ITV will be able to get decent ratings for any high profile dramas for much longer going forward we'll have to wait and see.

The ITV model up till recently was to have the soaps, big shows and football and then get reasonable ratings for a lot of other stuff because if people were on ITV1 already they would watch whatever came on next.

The figures show ITV1 is now completely losing this ability.

In contrast, BBC1 still has this ability to get decent ratings for fillers - but for how much longer?

We are watching the death of the British TV model.

Thats surprising to see for BBC One. I know their regualr staples like EastEnders and TOS are suffering from summer lulls, but they've had some pretty strong 9pm offerings - New Tricks, WDYTYA?, The Street. etc.

Presumably they must have suffered during the daytime in the school holidays too.

Car Crime UK finished its series yesterday on ITV1 with 3.0m (14%) at 8pm. Also the final edition of Neighbourhood Watched on BBC1 at 10:35pm had 2.3m (17.4%).

Fillers are by definition just tv wallpaper. Last week was hardly representative. Firstly the crazy stv dispute is affecting itv final figures. Secondly BBC1 is launching a lot of new drama & other shiows in August and ITV is in repeats or low budget factual runs or showing films.

I get what you're saying, but it does seem over probably the last year at least, that viewing patterns have greatly changed. Almost 50% viewing multichannel on a regular basis for instance is certainly a large departure from the way things used to be even a couple of years ago.

Has Itv1 droppped the bill REPEAT ? according to the radio times on friday sept 4th at 10.35 itv are showing the film 'intolerable cruelty'

It's not just one week though.

ITV1 has now had 11 weeks in a row of absolutely horrendous numbers. See graph below.

Of course things should now start improving but I do wonder just how much. There have still been an awful lot of further very poor numbers last week and this week.

The end of Big Brother is not a surprise but it's had a great run of ten years, 11 series with 'normal' people and 7 celebrity editions plus countless spin-offs.

It's surprising that BB is on the decline here, it's had a bit of a resurge in America although the American BB is very different from other versions and more akin to Survivor.

The Radio Times have Waking The Dead penciled in for Sunday 6 September, and although it's not confirmed yet, presumably Monday 7 September.

I suppuse this will give The Bill a bit of a break, but will repeats of Traffic Cops/Motorway Cops (which presumably will take the Thursday slot) outrate a drama about cops.

There's only one way to find out...

Nigel Slater's Simple Suppers will be 7:30pm Wednesday. The One Show hour episode will be on Fridays.
