When is a 'free text' not a 'free text?
I have signed up to Orange on a 12 month contract. Befor going on holiday, I asked whether the 2000 Free texts (Orange user to Orange user) would apply abroad. I was told yes!
Today I receive a bill for £122 showing that Orange havent charged me for any texts, yet the 'host' country's network has charged me 35p per text- and I sent 400+! Orange say that they were correct in saying that they wouldnt charge me, but the host country network can charge what it wants! Have Orange slightly deceived me, or is tough sh*t on me, and learn from this expensive mistake? I think Orange should have told me that there WOULD be a charge for my free texts when i asked them before going abroad, bearing in mind it was my first ever mobile phone contract!!! |

IMHO you were stupid not to realise that things go through 2 networks when you're abroad. Of course the other network is going to charge you - that's why they're so expensive normally.
Learn from your experience and feel happy about the fact that you only got charged by one operator. |

I disagree with CDS i think that the roaming network charged orange, and then orange charged you.
Either way Orange have been duplicitous. You should contact Watch Dog or something, they love that kind of thing. you could also ask for the tape of your original phone call to be pulled so you can hear exactly what was said. |

My daughter has a "free text" element on her contract but both she and I KNEW , without having to ask the service provider, that when she sent a text to her boyfriend (on military service abroad) the free text would not apply.
It would seem to me to be very naive of anyone to think it would! |

Orange PAYG talksaver, if you send to a short code number eg 80000 then you are charged at 12p for sending the text, even if you haven't used your 5 free messages.

Like i said, this is my 1st mobile contract so I dont have years of experience with 'networks' etc, but I still feel a little deceived (as well as stupid!).
I may ask Orange to give me a recording of my conversation with their operator and hopefully that will prove something...I hope! Cheers too those who said I was stupid...and to those who thought I was had

As the service you received was not 'As described' when you specifically asked, then you do indeed have a case. Do not let it rest, even if it means taking them to the small claims court.
Write to them, stating what has happened, giving them 28 days to respond, letting them know that you will take further action if required. |

You'll need evidence of Orange promising you that they'd work abroad, otherwise - realistically - you're going to get nowhere.
Contrary to popular belief - Orange DON'T record every call. |
