addititves in food products = poison?

I noticed a Red Bull Cola advert appeared on DS. I blocked the advert straight away with Adblock Plus, but it did bring to mind an issue I wanted to ask here…

Some experts say the addititves in food products (especially ones like fizzy drinks) are poisonous and can cause cancer even in moderate consumption. Yet these drinks are on the shelves in the UK.

What do you think? Do you drink fizzy drinks? And if so, do you worry about the long term effects on your health?

And would you ever give something like this to a child? Certain additives have been shown to cause hyperactivity and behavioural problems in children. I had this problem myself as a child (my doctor told my parents to stop giving me fizzy drinks). But I’ve seen evidence of this in children time after time: whenever a kid is given something brightly coloured to eat, they’re usually screaming shortly afterwards or having tantrums. Children screaming in public often seem to have a bottle of something brightly coloured in their hands.

I don’t claim to have much scientific knowledge on the subject, or know much more than anyone else. I don’t eat any processed food, so the issue doesn’t effect me. But I think it’s important to discuss any possible adverse health effects — especially for the sake of balance, since we have this kind of product being advertised here on the forum.

I'm suspicious of Aspartame but I'm too lazy to give much of a f*ck about it.

Perhaps aspartame causes laziness?

I drink Pepsi very occasionally but other than that I only drink R.Whites lemonade but even that has got artificial sweeteners in it.

Personally I think anything that goes into foodstuffs over and above 'real' things are mutagens, for better or for worse (the latter more likely). I try and avoid anything whose ingredients contain high levels of things like 'ides', 'ates' and the letter x, and would definitely do the same for my kids if I had any - they get hooked on it so early on as, as you allude to, it's a virtually inescapable part of modern society.

Nah, brain lesions apparently

Can cause. It's not definitive.

I don't like fizzy drinks, they hurt my throat

Also, I'm sure Red Bull won't be happy that they are paying to advertise their product, and a thread calling it poison appears

I agree, I think the prevalence of additives in food and drink is to blame for many health problems in society and it really says a lot that the government have such lax regulation of it.

There was an interesting documentary on the BBC a few months ago in which this guy mass produced a pie using really crappy ingredients like offal and treated it with many different chemicals. He then managed to get a licence to sell it and all the supermarkets were happy to stock it.

Some of the shit they use in food isn't fit for human consumption and although I don't think this should be banned, I don't see why the word "poison" or a skull and crossbones can't be used on the packaging like we do with cigarettes.

When I was a kid, the docs thought I was a bit 'hyperactive' (these were the days before ADHD became fashionable) and advised against me consuming too many e-numbers, Tartrazine in particular. I embarrassed the hell out of my mother in the supermarket one day by loudly proclaiming "ugh look mam, that lady's buying poison" in referrence to a customer with a tin of Ambrosia custard.

Yes it is.. OK it's not will cause but claiming it can is still definitive that it can.

The problem is that so many foodstuffs can cause health problems and adverse effects but I guess with everything else its about moderation and not solely relying on processed food as your main diet.

I think the government should be doing more to regulate our food industry but at the end of the day its to do with money and the sad fact is that the processed food industry generates obscene amounts of money that the government would have a hard time implementing harsher measures.

I do however think that parents should be more aware of what they are feeding their children. Common sense dictates that giving a child a caffeine based soft drink will make them hyper but if a parent is willing to do that then they shall face the consequences of their own actions and deal with that hyper child.

I thought the thread was about the actual drink tasting like poison , which wouldn't have been very far off...it's the most revolting thing ever.

NEVER buy the diet versions of fizzy drinks. I'd much sooner have the sugar of the dodgy sweeteners.

will be interesting to see if Digital Spy will close this reasonable thread, or give into the sponsor

We would never close a constructive discussion. That said, we do not appreciate being tested. Digital Spy is a free to use, ad-supported site so we would rather forum members did not discuss ways to block adverts on our own forums.

Thanks.

this thread is hardly about blocking ads, and I would agree discussing it on a public forum is wrong.

Ever wonder why children are so feral these days? Think e-numbers

There is a lot of talk of additives being damaging but in my mind not a lot of proof. People still think sweeteners cause cancer when they have been passed as perfectly safe by nearly every major country.

I’m pleasantly surprised by the reaction to my post. I’ve always thought most British people don’t much care about what they eat, and most people don’t like to be told something they do is unhealthy. So I was actually expecting a lot of negative “get a life” type comments. It’s nice to know I’m not the only person who has concerns about food safety. And opposition to these concerns is being voiced sensibly and calmly. (Is this really DS? )

I was pleasantly surprised to see that my thread wasn’t taken down, and I still have my membership.

I wonder if it would have been a different story if it were mobile phones rather than cola? Those mobile phone industries are very powerful and corrupt (as I have found from personal experience).

Very reasonable. Thank you!

As for the ad blocking, I honestly didn’t think DS cared how successful the advertising was. It hadn’t occurred to me (until right now) that this site might be using a PPC advertising model, so the adverts’ success matters to the site owners, not just the advertisers.

Interesting. I’ll have to take your word that Red Bull Cola tastes like poison because I wouldn’t dream of going anywhere near it.

All I drink is water! Beautiful, lovely, natural, free*, healthy water.

(*Well, you know what I mean.)

I hate to say it i was one of those children, I am 22 now and you can still give me a can of coke and i will become a monster and give me a chance and im sure i would even get in a argument with myself if nobody else was around to wind up and drive up the wall. My school tho used to say there was no such thing as hyperactivity and so when we had class birthday party's i would get a can of coke then the teachers would moan that i was totally out of control to my mum and then she would have to explain that if you are stupid enough to get her E Numbers you cant expect any different.

So i hate all these drinks like red ball and coke as they have so much crap in them but most people dont seem to care and yet they must do damage to you .

I agree with the OP 100%.

I avoid anything that says diet or light as these contain Aspartme which I have read studies have shown that it eats through rats brains in tests.

I think that additives certainly have a link to cancer and various other illnesses. Over the last few years have lost many friends and family members to this illness, even children to brain tumours and I am certain that the food we eat plays a part in this. Even my doctor commented that the arise in cancers has really increased in the last few years.

As I pointed out above, Aspartame has been passed safe by virtually every major country, including the US and the UK.
