Is this a con?
kirkie805

I am after buying a Samsung E700 and did a search on ebay and found lots of people quoting things such as:

'You are bidding on INFORMATION to get a brand new, boxed, unlocked for any network mobile phone.

The information will be e-mailed to the winning bidder as soon as payment is received, and will be in the form of links to three websites where you can get the Samsung E700, Nokia 6600, Nokia NGage and other top of the range phones for £20'

Are these cons and if not what are they and where do they get the info from?

Thank You...

Forgot to ask...Is the E700 any good?

They send you the website of a place like www.themobilematrix.com - there's loads of copies - and it's more than likely a scam.

Remember: if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

So is the mobile matrix site a con too then?

Dont do it. You are giving money to people to be put on a list... one which never ends basically.

For example, on the mobile matrix site.. look at the 6600.

There are at least 500 people on that list.. and that is EXCLUDING people from janurary and feburary. So at least 700 when u place. Im not exactly counting but it could be 1000.

Now, 1 phone is sent out for every 32 new people added to the list.

A little maths.

32 x 700 = 22,400

Right, so if you bourght today... it would take another 22400 people to sign up before you get your phone!

Some lists are even longer!!!

Still cant see why anybody would pay for that info when every bloody day somebody on most forums i go on post up the link for free!!

Its a SCAM and the ONLY people who are making money is the scammers who set up the scheme in the first place.

geeze. One born every minute.
In this case 7000.
7000 * 20 = £140,000 and they have delivered 200 phones.
Assuming they pay a top whack £100 for each that comes to £20,000.

Profit = £120,000 and 200 happy customers out of 7000.

Not funny to the 6800 who maybe have perpetual brain farts.

Email has been sent to trading stanards about this and hopefully they will pay the company a visit.

Read the advice at the head of this forum. This pyramid scam has being doing the rounds here for a while now and should be ignored. Its utter rubbish and discussing it merely gives it cred!

I used to help maintain one of these matrices, they are really useful when first opened, as you're one of the first people on the list, then it just becomes a big pain. Nothing can be legally done right now, it is the responsibility of the person paying by credit card to this matrix and not the person running it.

Legally they are untouchable - you're paying for a signal booster/ringtones cd, and you're place on the list is a 'gift'.

A tacky bit of sellotape with some wire glued onto it! Great way to mar the look of your mobile! Absolute nonsense and all you will ever get for your £20 from these ruthless scammers!

This really is a tax on the stupid!

I know these things can be cons sometimes when the list gets long, i have been the victim many times. They do work at the beginning though, and if you sign up quick enough you always get a phone.

I heard a new site like this is opening soon so ill post about it in the forum. Look out for it.

Hope it is of interest,

Dont bother Nick ..... we've heard all this rubbish before about this pyramid scam.

Post your link to that site and it will be deleted as it will be in breach of the posting terms here. There is a very clear warning about this type of covert advertising of scams in the post at the head of this thread by the forum moderator.

Completely with you on this one Mr Jock.

Dear nicksmith

Please don't bother with the link.

I was looking at your profile and you have linked to a website called matrix20.co.uk. It's currently a dead link (DNS Server failure) but I don't suppose this could be an amazing new matrix that people actually get phones on perchance?

Actually i believe that the warning was posted after nick smith started a thread advertising some other martix site.

Well put!

I've seen this scam a few times on ebay, especially for iPods for £20; they're so transparent I can't for the life of me understand why people fall for them!

All this "sending you links to a website" is complete and utter rubbish - it's so obvious that either the website is a dud or the person who set up the bid has also created this site. As soon as you "win" the link you are told "sorry, you weren't fast enough" as the link doesn't guarantee that you can actually take advantage of this wonderous offer.

Fools! As was said earlier, if it's sounds too good to be true, then it probably is!

Trading Standards got back in touch and said that at the moment, they can't be touched, but the law is in the process of being reviewed, and fairly soon, they will become illegal.

The lucky few at the top of the lists are going to benefit from the scam er, I mean, pyramid, er, I mean, matrix but the majority will (and do) suffer.

If you have got your phone why are you asking people to use your referral ?

In the above thread another "new member" was arguing on behalf of the scheme but seemed to disappear when challenged about using this forum to advertise a "matrix" pyramid scheme.

I fear this is happening again.

After checking out your only other posts I now see.

So what does giving your referral when a person signs up get for you?

Yep, smells of something...

If they get referals, it allows them to jump a certain number of places in the queue when the next phone is sent out.
