Hi as i have mentioned in a previous thread im going to buy a new lcd tv to replace my crt.

I have been into Comet today and fallen in love with a Samsung 40in Led TV after thinking i was going to buy a 40in Sony lcd.

So i would dearly value some advice as to what to do.

Thanks Paul.

apparently the LED's they are currently selling are only "LED backlit", the proper LED TV's havent been released yet.....

....Im sure someone will be able to confirm the truth of this?

They are both LCDs actually. The LEDs are only the backlight. "normal" LCDs use a tube similar to the fluorescents you may have hanging from the ceiling.

It isn't an array of red green and blue LEDs directly producing a picture.

The best way is to look at them yourself and decide which you prefer as your own preference is all that counts - this does rely on finding a shop that will do this properly though as most seem to have them set up very badly.

Indeed, some shops try and 'push' LCD but having those conected to some HD source and the Plasmas conected with a scart

Yes, at the moment it's clever (or sneaky) marketing to make people think that it's a totally new technology in the display:

"LCD screens are out of date, so yesterday, I've got a brand new LED screen".

marty greatest respect but you are obviously a plasma fan, most stores are the same and will have one tv wether lcd or plasma hooked up to the main source the rest are daisy chained to that one source.

no store purposefully puts the lcd onto the main source and not the plasma to make it look worse.

plasma is good for fast moving objects and larger (50" screens) lcd tends to be better for viewing angles and in general day to day viewing.

ultimately make your own choice up if needs be get the store to do direct feeds to one of each so you can decide but having owned a samsung lcd for over a year even i was amazed at the quality of the led screens.

the price of plasmas is dropping rapidly and if you really want the best it will be a top range pioneer or panasonic whereas a mid range samsung, lg, tosh sony (mid being £700 ish) will be more than acceptable for standard def tv, blu ray and freeview.

whichever you buy stick to a reputable make and you cant really go wrong but dont be falling into the hype of led, 200 hz processing and built in widgets at the end of the day 99% of the time your gonna sit in front of it and watch it not play with it, its a monitor the source you play into it is just as important as what you are watching it on.

Ive had this TV for almost 3 weeks now and think its great.
Like you I fell in love with it when I first saw it too and I wasnt even looking to buy a new TV, but the temptation was just too much for me. Then my wife saw it and she was the same.
The picture looks amazing with the Dark Knight on Blu Ray.
The freeview picture looks pretty good too.
If you connect the tv upto your modem you can connect to the internet which ive not fully tested out yet, but was pretty happy with the You Tube setup which is pre installed in the software.
This TV is a little expensive, but im so glad I made the purchase.

I can take you to several places where certain TV's are deliberately fed with an inferior feed & others with HD feed to push sales, I have a friend working in one of them

Plasma is in fact far superior with regard to viewing angles & well known for it.

I'm not a plasma fanboy as I believe both have their merits my last TV was LCD, now I have plasma & I have been very happy with both

Not an LCD Fanboy by any chance oh & for the record my LCD was at least as reflective as my plasma as it had a glossy screen

led isn't led. theres led backlight, led localized dimming, led rgb
plain led is just edge lit like cathode tube, maybe better, maybe worse. its a single factor. high color gamut lcds sometimes have cathode tube backlights. localized dimming depends on arrays of leds. how dense and how well controlled they are is another matter. do it badly and detail goes missing when dimming is botched..and worse. rgb led is well..expensive. its the best....

No but with plasma you get everything else... better motion...better black...natural colours...better gradients..... BETTER PICTURE!

I went from LCD to Plasma.. until OLED or something better comes along Plasma still wins if you want a pro picture. They still use plasmas on TV for studios etc.

I have a watch with OLED display - the major advantages are the low power consumption, no backlight required, 180 degree viewing angle without distortion and great contrast (due to no backlight).

But I fear it'll be a long time before anything bigger than my 1" display becomes affordable!
