Hello,

erm-- In the last 60 years, what is the longest intro ever to a song, before any lyrics are sung?

The best I can come up with is Boney-M's Rasputin, which is about 60 seconds.

David Bowie's Station To Station is the longest one I can think of.

Pink Floyd's "Shine On You Crazy Diamon (Parts I-V)" surely? It's almost 5 minutes before the band kick in.

'Song for Guy', by Elton John, I reckon.

*goes off to check*

Yeah, lyrics - such as they are - kick in at 5:13. There's a contender

...Mind you, that might be the album version , but the single version still comes in at an impressive 3:56

That one popped into my head too. 8 minutes 41 seconds before the vocals kick in, the track lasts 13 minutes 30.

Breaking Into Heaven by The Stone Roses, the first track from the criminally underrated Second Coming.

It builds up for about 10 minutes and was a hell of a way to announce your return after 5 years away.

Marvellous by the Lightning Seeds comes to mind, but it is no way as near as the songs mentioned above.

Even though there is a chorus at the start, it's like well over a minute before Last night actually settles in.

The Cure are good at long intros.

If we're talking about really big well-known hits, I'm surprised no-one's yet thrown in Blue Monday.

IntoOutro - I think it's by the Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band. The lyrics never kick in! Very funny.

I too was going to say Shine On. The two opening tracks on Duke by Genesis, Behind the Lines and Duchess run for 2+mins before vocals start. So does Heart Of The Sunrise by Yes,

The album version of Where the streets have no name is quite long. The first verse starts at 1:48.

Dreams Burn Down by Ride is a long one- lasts about a minute and a half IIRC. A lot of Ride songs have long intros and/or outros.

Hello,

Thank you everyone who contributed to my question.

Rasputin indeed, oh! the shame, .

I went with Revolver's suggestion, Shine On You Crazy Diamon, I have that on CD.

I googled Wahey's suggestion, Breaking Into Heaven by The Stone Roses,, I don't know it but couldn't find it.

Got a big family quiz on Sunday, under 25s against us oldies.

Thanks again.
