Our landline cut off today while my husband was in mid conversation.

I have tried everything. I unplugged all internet devices, unscrewed the bottom half of the face plate where the landline enters the house, then plugged a corded phone (which I know is in good working order) into the master socket, still nothing.

The mystery is that I can still access the internet !!!!! (of course after reconnecting router etc etc)

I tried contacting BT on my mobile but of course you don't get an actual person on the end of the line. However I did everything the "voice" told me to do, it said they were testing my line, and in fact I could hear some squeaks coming from the line, and they eventually said the line was ok. BUT IT'S NOT.

What do I do now.

Any suggestions gratefully received.

Try ringing back 151 or 0800 800 151, explain what the problem is, you will be given the "if the fault is proven on to your own equipment you will be charged £125 for the visit" statement.
It does sound as though you have done all the tests required, and BB can work over various fault conditions that a normal voice line wont.

Thanks to both speckledhen and Stuart.

I eventually got to talk to a "real" person who agreed to send out an engineer. Almost had to wait till next Thursday, but as my husband is housebound and needs the phone,. they pulled out all the stops and an OpenReach engineer came within the hour.

It seems there is a fault in a server in Preston Lancashire (I'm in S Wales!!) and there are 60,000 lines down.

Of course I am no further foreward as it is out of the hands of the local team, but at least I know it is not my line and it is being dealt with as a matter of urgency.

They arranged to divert incoming calls to my mobile, so at least we can let people know.

BT get so much flak, some of it they deserve, but this time I will give them the praise they deserve.

Forgot to mention..-..-..- Apparently this fault has to do with the work being done with regard to changing to 21CN.
