Sorry guys i know this might be annoying if you have dealt with it before, but be sympathetic please.

I have been given a BT Vision box I want to use for Freeview ONLY - I have connected it to my TV but the green light on the front just continually flashes and there is no picture or set up screens on the TV - can you tell me what the problem is and how I can correct it. The box is brand new out of it's packaging and I only want to use it as a Freeview box.

Any guidance to the obvious would be greatly appreciated

Unless you have a BT Broadband line with Vision enabled, the box is less than useless, you could recycle the hard drive but thats it.

as per fraggle's comments.

needs bt bb to work. it's an insurance policy if you like to try and retain custom.
bt said a while back about unlocking the box but this doesn't seem to be high on their agenda.

OK thanks guys so - it doesn't work as a stand alone unit as per others?

Surely it should work standalone tho it's no different from other boxes is it?

If that's so it better find it's way on to ebay but i will make that a note to warn everyone.

Not much point putting it on ebay. The box is free when you sign upto BT Vision from BT.

Sorry uk_25596 but buying a BT Vision box off ebay or a man in a pub is a bit of a con.
From BT's point of view why would they make a twin tuner 80gb PVR and give them away to people on the understanding that they will become and continue to be BT customers given that a lot of people would sign up, get the 'free' box sell it on ebay and tell BT to **** off.....
BT aint never going to make the BTV box a stand alone freeview pvr...
ebay should maybe put something on the site stating the box wont work unless you have BT broadband and a BTV account, and if you got those you probably already got a BTV box, still if you got the box for free, you wont be out of pocket,

There's info here about modding the box:

Code:
http://www.t-hack.com/wiki/index.php/Main_Page
You may be able to get it working without BT BB.

I would agree with that, to a degree.

A certain other tv broadcaster (who shall remain nameless as their very mention causes certain forum members to foam at the mouth) stop the PVR funtionality of their digibox if you cancel subscriptions to their service.

However, their digiboxes/receivers can still be used to receive free-to-air channels without paying them a penny.

In my opinion, the BT Vision box should have been able to at receive the freeview channels independent of the BT Broadband and BT vision services - fair enough, stop the PVR functionality and only allow access to the VOD content to BT BB customers (to at least tie customers in), but at least it means the box wouldn't become a doorstop once the customer stops paying for BTBB and closed their Vision account.

A future software upgrade to provide this was once proposed by BT, but never delivered, and all mention of such upgrade removed from BT's website/FAQ's.

Yep - the main irritation for me is that when the glorious day comes and I leave BT BB I will lose all my recordings from Vision. I have a stack of DVD-Rs at the ready to do the necessary archiving!

You could get a BT account as you get Freeview on it Sign on for the Gold pack and watch Picture box which is free Films as well and a ESPN Card gives you Free Sport as well Saves Hacking or Damaging the Box
other than that you are on your own
