Great band, though I was just a little too young to appreciate them first time around.

Just a pity they split in 82 and didn't carry on as I wasn't a big fan of the Style Council.

you said it all, one of the great British bands

going underground going straight to no1 was a shocker, that just didn't happen in them days, normally you went in at about 33 and steadily climbed.

Great band!!

Butterfly Collector (Live)

David Watts (Live)

Smithers Jones (audio + pics)

Pity that Paul Weller went right down in my estimation with The Style Council.

Tho' he apparently realises they were a bit shit himself now.

I went and saw them 3 times in '82. Also, saw their last but one ever concert They were brilliant.

Style Council was a bit lame but Weller found his mojo again.

Love it.

Love The Jam. Favourite tracks for me are Down In The Tube Station At Midnight, The Eton Rifles, The Bitterest Pill (I've Ever Had To Swallow), English Rose and That's Entertainment.
I know most Jam fans hate Bitterest Pill, but to me it's rather a decent track. English Rose is beautiful and haunting.

Setting Sons is their crowning glory imo. Absolute masterpiece. "Thick As Thieves" their greatest track.

Excellent band.

Weller is vastly under-rated.

The OP said it all really in my opinion - one of the best British bands ever! I've been a fan for the majority of my life despite the fact they disbanded 2 years before I was born.

...I know most Jam fans hate Bitterest Pill, but to me it's rather a decent track. English Rose is beautiful and haunting.
Bitterest Pill IS a decent track although a lot of fellow Jam fans that I know think it is yet another example of "prototype Style Council" from the 1982 offerings. As much as I like the song, if I had to choose never hearing 'A Town Called Malice' or 'Bitterest Pill' again, it would definitely be a case of bye bye Town Called Malice for me. Compared to a lot of songs from 1982, Bitterest Pill holds up rather well.

That is another one that doesn't get played enough.

One of my all-time favourite bands. I first got into them when they released Down In The Tube Station At Midnight around 1978 (yes, showing my age, lol) and absolutely worshipped them. I still have all their albums, on vinyl and cd and most of their singles on 7 inch. My favourite album of theirs is Sound Affects (I adore just about every track on it), followed closely by Setting Sons, but I love all their albums and all their singles, many of which weren't on any of their studio albums, of course.

I did love The Style Council and love much of Weller's solo stuff but there was just something about his stuff with The Jam that no one else can touch. I still find their music fresh and exciting.

Well I dont think Paul ever hid his love of The Kinks & The Small Faces. Is that a bad thing? Definitely NOOOOOOO. saw them 3 times and loved it when their singles used to go straight to number 1.

I started listening to them on Spotify and I'm thinking of getting a compilation album for christmas. However there's about thirteen to choose from!

Can anyone recommend which one to get, or are they all more or less the same?
