I blame the downfall of the music industry on commercial radio, it barely plays more then 40 songs and is cuts songs so much - the point of radio is the music!

The reason commercial pop stations only play a limited selection of music is because most people don't listen for long periods of time, so the most popular songs are played very frequently so when people listen they're likely to hear them.

I think blaming the state of music in the UK on radio is really quite stupid, the same with blaming it on MP3s. If more quality tracks were released instead of rubbish that only appeals to primary school kids then maybe music wouldn't be in the state it is today.

But the "rubbish music" you talk of is the music that usually gets a place on Commercial Radio. The quality music struggles alot more to get on the playlist because of lack of fan base or little intrest from the media.

Yes, but if there was non of this Pop Idol/Stars/Fame Academy nonsense, plus less crap like Fast Food Rockers, then commerical radio would have to find better songs to play, just like it used to do.

They only play non stop pop because thats whats popular, so if people woke up to the fact that theres MUCH better music around that doesn't get much exposure, then maybe things would change.

Or they could phase it in! I mean take away the music and what is commercial radio left with - advertisments and news beats.

I see both of you have become as pessimistic as me as to Commercial Radio!

When the old IBA was replaced by the Radio Authority in 1991, It was announced that they would attempt to break new Grounds, and launch new services and insist the new services kept to their licence requirements. It was hoped these services would offer much more than the usual offered by BBC Radio or local ILR. This was when I became interested in the Radio World as I had the chance to find services not within my reception area, to see how much they differed to Bland FM (Red Dragon FM). One such station I came upon was Galaxy in late 1993 and it blew me away with Specialist Dance Shows each weekday. Without boring you too much, Galaxy became a Regional Service in the Autumn of 1994, and kept to it's re-mit of Pop/Dance during the Day and Specialist House at Night. When the new owners(Chrysalis) bought it, within a 18 month period, it was replaced by another Bland FM, making it more mainstream but moving the specialist shows to the weekend (which I was grateful for).

I still hoped that Galaxy 101 would become better than the average ILR available, but it seemed, on the occasions I listened to it, it was aiming itself as another Bland FM, and losing it's aims/targets.

Radio these days can only play songs that are available, or as I'm speculating Record Companies have amazing A&R people, and Programming Consulants in every available Station swollow what they say, and play it every hour or two.

Thanks to the Internet, (or if you want to suggest Sky Digital), there are more opportunities for you to come across a gem of a Channel/Station, but it's a shame that those stations that started it (like Galaxy) have lost it's appeal.

I would not mind - but when they get hold of a certain song, they play it to death. Like JT's Rock Your Body was played far too much.

Commercial radio is always going to play safe on the playlists. They can't risk alienating the audience and so we here bland safe pop, commercial rock and R&B lite. Radio 1 is often criticised, but it offers a choice of music you would rarely hear in the commercial spectrum.

I like Radio 1 - It really is getting far too much critiscm, it plays a wide range of music and keeps to its dance and urban originals. At the weekend etc.

I don't listen to commercial radio for the simple reason that I can't bear to listen to adverts. There are so many reliable, good quality, advert free services available over the net - I'm suprised anybody still bothers with the commercial junk.

The adverts do feel like they've increased recently.

Its the DJ's as well though. There must be a training course for local radio DJ's to learn how to be quite so inane and talk such s***e.

I know people might say the same about radio 1 (me included if the subject is Sara Cox) but most are intelligent and entertaining.

On Key 103, my local station we have DJ's who read out articles or jokes from Newspapers and claim them as their own. Their fillers are laboured, tedious and dull.

IT actually becomes a relief to hear 'Rock your body' for the fifth time in an hour.

I find Scott Mills quite funny on Radio 1. Shame he gets moved round so much.

Apparently its between Mills and Colin and EDith to do maternity cover for Coxy. Either would be good, and far better than the present.
