That's right, Disney have bought out Marvel Entertainment for $4 billion.

Just saw this. Really hope they don't change anything.

Disney are usually hands off if an acquisition is turning a profit. I think, like WB and DC, they are in it for the lucrative movie licences.

I would not expect Donald Duck to join the avengers anytime soon

Thats one of the things I am worried about! Marvel studios has been making some cool movies lately, and their animations are awesome (Hulk vs, for example).

I wouldn't worry. All this means is that Marvel now have a great big sugar daddy like DC with warner.

If they're smart though, they'll use this to help expand their lines into more diverse areas. Disney have a lot of lisences, they really need to think how best to exploit that.

Also, I wanna see the Incredibles meet the Fantastic 4.

One of those franchises is Power Rangers. Marvel's specialty is superheroes. A perfect fit.

Small question: whilst it probably won't affect any comics that much, surely the bigger licenced film franchises which are distributed elsewhere (IE umpteenth proposed X-men sequels through Fox) would be under threat due to this?

Marvel have been desperately trying to reacquire the rights to Fantastic Four and Spider-man, but fox in particular is being obstinate. Even though rothman has no real interest in producing comic book films, there's already a rumbling of a F4 reboot.

It certainly needs one!

I liked the Roger Corman version. No budget, but it had heart.

Coming soon Willie mild mannered steamboat driver gets bitten by a radioactive rodent and becomes the Magnificent Mickey-Mouse-Man.

Just been talking to a friend who runs a comic shop. He's extremely worried about what this could mean for UK distribution-it seems it's often almost impossible for small independent comic shops in the UK to get hold of material published by Disney or its subsidiaries, and he's concerned that they might likewise stop distributing the Marvel monthlies outside the US and just concentrate on the trades for the bookstores. That would kill the UK comic shops, or most of them.

Yeah, those comic shops won't survive with only Beano, 2000AD, Dandy Xtreme, Toxic, and a whole bunch of kids licenced tat to sell. And if I'm not mistaken, they don't currently stock any of that stuff, since they're easily available from newsagents.

I'm assuming DC Comics already has the problem you say Marvel will have thanks to the corporate suits at Time Warner?

No, but then Warner have a different outlook. Thing is, DC and the independents alone will not be enough to keep British shops in business. Things are pretty tight for many of them as it is, and Marvel sell better than DC in a lot of places.

Disney have already said they are going to have a hands-off approach with Marvel. I can't see them dismantling the delivery and supply structure that Marvel already has in place with Diamond.

Honestly, I don't think that there is much to worry about at all here. Disney will just sit back and reap profits from movie deals and such.

CGI silver surfer movie, anyone? Get PIXAR on it. Now.

Isn't USF part of Disney World in Orlando? It'll stay.

I'd like to hope (ever the optimist) that Disneys comic distribution will improve as they learn from marvel, rather than marvel getting worse.

I don't know exactly how all the liscencing works, but I doubt the ride would get ripped straight out even if they were at conflicts to one another, I'm sure Universal covered their backs, since there is more than just the spider-man ride, they would also have to re-name and in some cases re-decorate a fair few rides, such as the Hulk and Doctor Doom's Fear Fall (I'm sure there are more but it has been a long time since I was there)

As far as i know, Marvel will continue with the same level of autonomousness as DC has with WB, in as much as running itself and whatnot. I see the deal on a similar level to that with Pixar, and we all know how that has turned out!

I can see the main benefits being Marvel animations of higher quality (tho maybe no more Wolverine slicing arms off like in Hulk Vs), and possible getting the shows on the Disney channels. Maybe we may even get some CGI movies (imagine Iron Man, or even Ultimate Avengers).

I see this as a good thing, and doubt there will be much, if any, watering-down.

Any future new cartoons will almost certainly end up on Disney XD, I agree there.

in an interesting twist, Sony have given up their rights to screen any Spider-Man based TV shows.

Presumably this is some kind of deal to let them keep producing spidey movies... however it kind of leaves Spectacular Spider-Man up in the air. Will Disney take over the show?

No it doesn't leave it up in the air, it's already screened on Disney XD in the US. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Spe...an_(TV_series)

Wikipedia mentioned the rights being handed back, but the source they used (a Gargoyles fansite!) says it has no idea if the show is affected. Considering the broadcast network is Disney XD, I seriously doubt that the show is under threat at all. http://www.s8.org/gargoyles/askgreg/search.php?rid=836

My point still stands - Disney won't want to see it axed if they already air it and it's getting good ratings. They'll take over production.
