Dog having trouble walking

Hiya
Before I start a vet appointment is being made tomorrow and we are hoping that they will be able to actually see her tomorrow, but just wanted to know if anyone knows what it could be as I am a big worrier lol
My collie x lab Pippa who will be 6 in October, seems to have hurt her left back leg but we dont know how or what she could have done to it.
She has been fine all day went on her walk this morning ok then about 1 ish went on a walk and them to my nan and grandads where my mum was.
And was fine up to here
She went to sleep, then when she woke up my grandad noticed she didnt seem to be walking normally and she wouldnt put her foot on the floor but was ok after a few seconds, but still a bit unsteady.
When I got there she was still a bit unsteady but was jumping up to say hello and then wanted to play, and all was fine.
But then since we have been home she has been asleep on her bed probs for about 1 and a half hours and then when she got up she couldnt put it down at all, and was like hoping but trying to put it down then pulled it up again, so it has obviously got worse since this afternoon.

Does anyone know what this could be I thought maybe a strain or a pulled muscle but it seems too bad to be one I thought.
She was fine yesterday and went over the park and didnt hurt herself or anything over there.

Thanks if you have read all of this, and thanks if anyone has any help

and Like I said vet is being called tomorrow

I've mentioned on many a thread about Murphy & his poorly leg.

We still don't know for certain what caused it - he's an older boy (nearly 12) and very chest heavy (a Glen of Imaal Terrier) so even jumping of his chair wrong could have sprained something.

We rested for two days with Metacam and saw no improvement so I took him to the vet. I had already given a good exam, but the vet knows her stuff and manipulated him much further than I would. She also checked for swellings, abrasions and grass seeds.

In Murphy's case, she concluded that he *might* have sprained his shoulder but couldn't be sure, and proscribed a week of rest and Metacam. He actually improved going to the vet (I blame adrenaline) and after another three days, no limp and wanted his walk. Another couple of days and we put him back on gentle walks - right as rain.

In Pippa's case there could be many causes so it is good that you are going to the vet tomorrow. Grass seed, abrasion or swelling should be spotted by the vet and are treatable (swelling is usually an infection). Muscular strain is harder to diagnose but Pippa may react if manipulation causes pain.

While Labs have a propensity towards hip displasia, in a six year old cross I would be very optimistic that it isn't this. I would guess that in the absence of a definitive diagnosis, you will be proscribed Metacam and rest with X-rays if no improvement after a week.

Hope Pippa is well soon and fingers crossed it is just a strain - they can take a while to heal but do heal well

Thanks for your reply
I think I remeber reading about Murphy and how you had done exactly what the vet said to do before going, but he only improved after seeing the vet lol. Glad he is ok now

Yh we have looked at her legs and cant see any sweeling or anything, but obviously a vet may be able to tell better than us.

The thing we dont get is that she is letting us touch her leg, go all up her foot and hip everything and doesnt seem to be in any pain, so it isnt bothering her its just the little look that she gives you when she gets up as if to say, my poor leg

just googled "hip displasia" as I wasnt sure exactly what it was, and I hope it isnt that but read that it says is usualy diagnosed by the time the dog is 18 months old, so hopefully it wont be that.

Hopefully she will be ok, we just dont know why it is only when she has been asleep/laying down for a long period of time that it is happening

We are all hoping it is a strain aswell

Thank you

It does sound like a strain (usual disclaimer - not a vet, etc) - Murphy let us examine and manipulate his leg with no murmur, just the 'fix it mum' look. Only showed semi-discomfort at the vet's when she hyper extended his shoulder - that may have been him getting fed up at the exam (rolling on his back)

BUT vet is good - might catch something you missed or if it is a strain they can prescribe Metacam (Pain killer/anti-inflammatory, like Ibuprofen for dogs). It'll make Pippa much more comfortable.

yh Murphy's sounds the same so hopefully thats what Pippa's is.
and the little look is so sad, as she is feeling so osrry for herself and when my dad came in from work it was a look like, look dad im ill so he went and fussed her.

Yh mum is gonna ring in the morning as soon as they open to get her an appointment which hopefully they will fit her in, we have got rabbits seen the day we called so they arent usually fully booked or anything.

We was gonna take her to the emergancy vet, but when we had to take her their last time they couldnt xray anyway, so mum thought let her rest tongiht and see how she is in the mroning as she hates the vet anyway, and would have had a long car journey whereas our local one is like 10 mins away.

Thanks for your help, reading your post has stopped me worry too much

Have you inspected her pads / feet, as grass seeds can easily in-bed themselves this time of year.

My dog was limping on his front paw, after inspection I noticed a lump in-between his claws on the upper side and saw a dark mass, gave it a squeeze and out popped an 1 inch long grass seed!!

Its quite common this time of year.

Might not be that but worth a look.....

My Alsation Zinda slipped on the wet road last weekend and has a bit of a limp from his front left leg.

Doesn't stop him running and playing so I suppose he's just strained something.

We have been giving him Metacam and taking it easy with his walks and is improving.

We have checked all his joints and foot and nothing seems wrong.

If he was in pain I would take him to the vet but he seems quite happy and in no pain.

I took her to the vet today, he has prescribed a anti-inflamatory (not the one mentioend in here) but he watched her walk and couldnt see anything wrong, so is going on what we have told him whats been happening.
She doesnt seem as bad today as she did yesterday but its still happening, so hopefully the anti inflamotrys will work.
He has also said no off the lead which means no park for her for 5 days.
Thanks for all the help
