Must try and engage brain!.....is Adam part of the answer?!
sangreal
06-06-2010
No. Nothing to do with Adam.

"reportedly" is key to most of the clue, so start from there, then put the "issue" after.

Yeah, it's a bit of a toughie.
This should help....

Reportedly:
1) Belonging to first person
2) to remove inferior(s)
3) entrance

+issue

1) Mine? (mein, myne etc)
3) In?

Having a mare!!
sangreal

1) Very close with "mine", but shorter (and: sounds like).

3) Sounds like a word for an entrance

"issue" (4) is in the typical cryptic crossword sense (literal, not 'sounds like')

Admittedly, the "sounds like: to remove inferiors" part (2) is the toughest/shabbiest bit.

1) My = Mi?
2) Cull? = chael?

Michael ---son?!
Terrence Chant

Omg what a brain purp! It's Michael Daw (door!) son! Ex-Forest player as well

btw, how does issue = son? I've not come across that cryptic before

Next clue before I forget it!!!

Mate of Dennis Hopper starts gambling at the races

Yup. "My cull door son", it was.

Issue = offspring/child(ren) = son

Ah, I see now, cheers San

Ace clue btw

This new one is a former footballer who I'm confident you'll have heard of

Mate of Dennis Hopper starts gambling at the races

Former footballer, largely Prem, 1991-2001 (6,8)

Suggest if you solve the hopper cryptic, it'll remind you of the rest of the player's name

Does Tote have anything to do with the surname?
Terrence Chant
08-06-2010
Hi Ig, no I'm afraid not. Races could easily just be 'race' really....it refers to a sport but not horse racing

Steven Froggatt fits but unsure if it's right?

Hopper - Frog

Starts gambling at (start = first letters)

the races - tt

Not sure on how to get Steven though, Dennis ref?
Terrence Chant
09-06-2010
Right answer Fred!

Meant start gambling as just the g

at = @ looks like 'a'

tt = race and hopper = frog as you say

The first name was pants but I needed a Dennis to go with my hopper!.....it was Hugh Dennis who's mate is Steve Punt....y'know.....Punt & Dennis, Mary Whitehouse Experience, etc?!

Well done again
