There seems to be a consensus from the RFL that they don't want contested scrums; in the last few seasons I have seen referees give penalties for scrum infractions, and even for the hooker striking for the ball!

ETA: Scrums don't even seem to be fed into the tunnel anymore; invariably the ball is fed straight through the legs of the second row.”

I've seen the scrum half put the ball in with one hand, between the loose forwards legs, simply transferring it to the other hand! It didn't even touch the floor!

But don't blame the actual players. Wigan Vets match with Leigh Vets - A friendly rugby union match between the rugby stalwarts on 17th March. Nothing to do with Wigan Council.

I agree about the scrum , but the line-out is still very competetive. This is why I cannot understand the aimless kicking to the full back.

Why not kick to the corners rather than down the middle. One of rugby's easier skills is kicking from the hand. Any decent player should be able to kick to the corners and, in fact, get it to bounce out of play.

Line-outs seem to be lost quite regulary on your own throw and even if you lose the line-out you still have the opposition on the back foot.

I watched the first 60mins and it was 40 odd point to 20 to the cheifs after a tight first half which saw the Lions, with Carlos Spencer take the lead for a short time, before Chiefs pulled it back then took control. it was 20-26 i think at half time!

Obviously something went mental in the last 30 mins!

See how the ref governed the breakdown. It was, as Barnesy said, rugby league without the 6 tackle rule.

England have announced an unchanged team for the Ireland gaem except on the bench where Mears comes in for Thompson Worsley comes in for Armatige and Foden gets a spot on the bench in place of one of the props.

Not sure how I feel about it, think dropping Armatige is a mistake as he gives you something different in the forwards.

I was just about to write that Armitage hasn't been dropped, then I realised you meant Steffon

can wait till the other two brothers get call ups

I wonder Foden will get on this time, he's not exactly been given a chance to show his talent

This was more of a one off but the high try counts in Super 14 is why I can watch that but cant watch the premiership. The Premiership is boring to me. Super 14 will never have the tackle count that European Rugby has but its a lot more entertaining.

A rugby match with no tries is crazy to me.

It depends on what you like about the game I suppose. I like the forward battles scrums, lineout, rucks and mauls. I love the tight exchanges.

I like rugby league for some aspects, you can show people how to defend using league I do it when I am coaching. But I prefer the contest for the ball that happens in union. If you take a ball into contact you and your team have to more than just hold on to it to keep possesion.

A lot of League types pop up in union as defensive coaches it seems.

I prefer to see a free flowing, passing game, which is why I prefer League.

There have been mumblings in recent years of the two codes re-uniting, with the way that union's rules have been seemingly changing towards a more 'spectator friendly' game.

I also think that penalty points in union are overvalued, as is the drop goal. But being a League fan,I would say that.

RL is great. I've been a follower since the London Crusaders days.

In RL, at the tackle, the game stops.
In RU, at the tackle, the game starts.

Your in London reading a localised London Metro which is reporting on a game between two London rugby clubs and wondering why there is only a paragraph about a sport that is mainly played in the North.

The mirror today has 1 qtr page dictated to Rugby Union even though England have a huge game on Saturday and about the same in two peices on rugby league. the other 8 od sports pages are dedictated to football.

You have a point but lets be real. Rugby League gets v little mainstream press. Whether its the RL World Cup or 4 Nations the mainstream press coverage League gets is a joke. We all know the game isnt played that much here in the south but the sport still gets fantastic tv ratings and I do think the mainstream press could give it more coverage than it gets.

unfortunately the red tops are mainly focussed on football (or at least they claim their readers are). Last year the Sun got rid of their rugby reporter, so bar 6 Nations you're never like to get a page spread on Union

as for Rugby League, I think Daily Star (when it's not fixated on Katie Price) has 'decent' coverage.

I think BBC/ITV should look into covering Super League matches, as this will drive up interest. Which will hopefully convince the southern biased newspaper to follow it more.

it's pretty disgraceful that SL coverage is restriction to red button on Sunday (with an early hours Monday morning repeat)
