Is that why he awarded 12 penalties in Scotlands favour as against 4 to Ireland?

These referees are supposed to be the top referees in Rugby. If they don't know what goes on in the scrums and are just guessing the game is a farce.
According to Keith Wood, Owens constanly telling the front rows to move closure was wrong. I also agree with Keith about the nonsense with the pause, which should be done away with.

Don't think England will be worried about today's match. Did Scotland ever look like scoring a try?
Ireland gave away a lot of penalties and kicked too much away.
Owens seemed to have more influence on the game than anyone else.

I wouldn't argue with that. It does seem to be a fair bit of a faff.

But until it is done away with the referees have to be seen to follow the rules regarding it.

The refs like the teams to be close as it takes out the impact of the hit, the trouble is the hit is now the key to the scrum not the ability to scrummage. I like to be as far away as possible, then my legs and feet are in a better position. Making the scrum stonger.

The dynamics of an international scrum are so great, I think the forces involved are around 2 tons of pressure going through the front row. So you can imagine someone who's back is not stright or whos head is below his hips can only ever go to ground. The law needs to change in some way but I am not sure how. Unless you have scrums come together without a hit then start the push.

Didn't matter at the end of the match as the pens were awarded in areas of the field where Scotlands limited gameplan wasn't going to benefit. I do struggle with Owens interpretation of the breakdown. Whenever he's reffed Munster or Ireland in the past five years ,the breakdown just seems to end up as a mass pile on with a free for all in terms of players igoring the gate as the route of entry.

Am back from Rome, in just about one piece. As a neutral, I really enjoyed the match, fantastic atmosphere, great crowd. And if you're wondering why the singing of the anthems was woefully out of time, you just could not hear the band in the ground at all, so the crowd had to find its own pace. The welsh eventually sounded in time to me; the italians seemed to be singing at different speeds, but all seemed to get to the final crescendo at the same point. Both anthems gave me tingles. Great stuff.

The welsh in our party didn't enjoy the game as much as I did, they were feeling like things were back to square one, despite the win.

If you ever get the opportunity to go to a match in Rome, take it. The ground doesn't hold many, but makes it all the better in my mind, unlike the top tier at Twickenham. Biggest isn't always best.

Rome was stunning - ignore anyone who says it's dump, as was suggested by some welsh supporters in our hotel, the pronouncement was due to the fact that they couldn't find any decent bars.... Absolutely bizarre.

Take lots and lots and lots of money, and some sturdy walking boots for the sightseeing. Great weekend.

Cheers for that, I am desperate to visit Rome. Lots of friends have been on various rugby jaunts but never made it myself I have only heard good things about it though.

Really, there are numerous bars & restaurants in any of the central areas of Rome, can't have ventured far IMO. Not cheap but I don't think anywhere in Eurozone is these days.

Glad you enjoyed it. Have been to Rome as a tourist but loved it and quite fancy going again, combining the sightseeing with some Rugby.

Scotland converted 5 penalties to Ireland's zero.

Just seen confirmation that Kyle Eastmond has signed for Bath.

They plan to play him at fly half.

Could soon be part of a deep pool at that position for England with (even after Wilkinson retires) Flood, Goode, Burns (young Gloucester player) and whatever comes through the age groups.

Looking back at the weekend:

Didn't see all that much of the games in Italy and Scotland, neither match looked very good though.

England v France was a step or two up in intensity from anything seen so far in the Tournament.

Both sides tried a bit too hard to play at times and, with the weather and intense defence, this produced the odd messy bit of play.

The impressive thing was the way England tightened up in the 2nd half and set the platform before releasing their runners. I've now looked at it a few times now and don't think the pass to Ashton was forward (seen many clearer ones allowed) and Tindall wasn't ever held on his 'try' which should also have been allowed (see Fouriue's run near the end - he was closer to being tackled). Add even one of those and a look (and pass) to his right by Ashton and even allowing for Rougerie (sp) grounding the ball rather than knocking on and it was a pretty good performance - actually by both sides.

France played by far their most focused game so far - they've been sleepy for long periods in the other two - and had their best back line (although they should start Parra).

I think Chabal is very near the end of of his international career - they have many better back rows now and need Hairy Donkey at 8. Dusatoir was a beast in the tackle, and damn good all round the pitch.

I also though England adjusted very well in the scrum. Corbisiero looks very good for the future and with him, Cole (outstanding) , Wilson and youngsters like the impressive Mahler at Quins the props cupboard is well stocked even if (as I think will happen) Sheridan retires from interationals after the World Cup. And thanks to Gatland for stirring up Hartley - if he did. I was a bit concerned about the 2nd row with the absence of Lawes and Attwood but Deacon has just been totally solid. Palmer is having an outstanding time. Wood has settled in as though born to it and Haskell is starting to be the player I thought he would become after some injury and loss of form.

I watched the game again and made a special point to observe Hape. He actually does a lot of the grunt work in midfield and, with Tindall, helps to clear out and speed up the available ball. Doesn't make headlines for that. Great to see Foden's try. Ashton (rightly) has got a lot headlines recently but Foden is very dangerous in attack - and now utterly solid in defence.

I thought his fitness level was amazing, he was tackling in the last few minutes with the same intensity as the opening.

Sheridan out of the 6 nations

His world cup qtr final match match was the one I will always remeber. He made something like 39 tackles. I think it was more than the whole All Blacks team made all game or something silly like that. To put it in perspective, a top flight flanker is expected to make about 13-18 tackles a game.

If he is fit he will be in the squad, calf injury should be ok.

Very disappointed by Wales performance on Saturday. Not clinical enough and too many unforced errors. Don't think Matthew Rees is skipper material. Spikey Phillips and Stephen Jones were far too sub par but it was nice to see Lee Byrne regain some form.

He struggled with fitness for International rugby at the start of his career , largely due to the step up from a poor Welsh domestic competition at the time. A lot of people still judge him against those poor standards but props have traditionally been late to mature throughout the amateur and professional eras of the game.”

Wrong nationality perhaps? Anyway, McGeechan rates him which is good enough for me.

At the Wasps v Sarries match on Sunday the ref sent off Tim Payne for illegally tackling a player being lifted for a line out, and then sent off John Hart for kicking a ball away in a ruck,

This meant that Wasps were reduced to 13 men for a period. During this period Sarries scored 12 points and Wasps lost, eventually, by 11 points.

Subsequently TV evidence showed that the Saracens lifters had dropped their own man (Tim Payne was nowhere near the lifted man), and the ball had been knocked on by a Sarries player - John Hart had kicked the ball after it was free.

Both yellow cards have now been recinded, and I gather the ref has apologised to Wasps.

The result still stands, and Wasps didn't even get a losing bonus point as a result.

(They didn't deserve to win though!)

We came home with LOADS of the horned Peroni hats there were three empty rows in front of us.... shame to waste them.
I think Peroni scored an own goal there by making them red, it made it looked like there were many more Welsh fans than in reality. The hats should have been blue.... my only gripe of a fantastic weekend.

Gregor Townsend seems to have lost his grip on reality by predicting a win for Scotland. Is this the same team that has failed to score a try at home in the last 8 matches?
That is not to say it will be a walkover for England. No doubt they will avoid the error of 10 or so years ago when they turned up at Murrayfield thinking all they had to do was be on the park for 80 mins and they would win and lost when the heavens opened.
