He wanted to keep Ashton, but the powers above didn't

he didn't or couldn't fight his case hard enough
As the Director of Elite Rugby, or whatever he calls himself these days surely that is his job.

Martin Johnson couldn't really control them off the pitch and training ground. They are all grown men and really wanted should have shown better respect. They were more interested looking like prats and going on the P**s.

I don't like/follow rugby at all but Rob Andrew is a bit of a cock isn't he?

Yes, no surprise.
He was a great player, but a gamble to think he could coach to the same level.
Who next though? Overseas?
Our friends in New Zealand seem to think Graham Henry is a nailed-on cert for the England job. Got an email off them last week asking if he'd been officially appointed yet??

I'd still like to see Ian McGeechan in the job!!

I think I'm the minority on this one, but I still fail to see what Tindall (and the others out drinking did wrong).

None of the England players caused a scene at the bar, none of them smashed up the place, none of them offended/fought with anyone at the bar and they weren't the only national rugby team to have visited the venue that week. The bar's website/Facebook page also has photos of the Romanian team there a few days before/after England (can't remember which).

Also it's a myth to say that none of the of major nations were out drinking during the tournament, Warren Gatland said during a press conference before Wales vs France. Tindall was a bit niave to be drapsing over a former girlfriend/university mate, but I don't see how that in itself is such a terrible breech of discipline.

As I understand it the main issue is that he went onto another bar (without his teammates) and didn't admit this to RFU. This led to the press being misinformed and the previous 'bad' story continued to rumble on.

IMO I still don't think that was worth the OTT media frenzy that followed the England team.
The mock outrage from the press focused in on TIndall for one reason and one reason only. Granny-in-law is the queen.

So he went out and had possibly a few too many beers the best part of a WEEK before their next match, not the night before, a week before.
Big bloody deal.
These guys are as physically fit as you can get - even back in the amateur days characters like Teague and Skinner (who both enjoyed a scoop or two) could turn up for training the day after a heavy night out and out perform everyone else on the pitch.

I remember when the entire NZ pack walked into my local after a match at the '91 world cup. They mingled, drank and joked with us the entire evening. A good night was had by all. It's a side of rugby that shouldn't have to be sacrificed simply because the game has gone professional. Fans and players alike regard it as part of what makes rugby special.

So we (England) didn't have a good world cup. I for one thought the team we had was good enough for a semi at best.
Nights out and leaping off ferry's didn't cost us a world cup, and whilst on the ferry issue, even though it was a reckless, stupid stunt it kind of demonstrated that the team had bonded. Had he been thrown off the ferry however......

I think it's more likely for him to get involved with an English premiership team possibly Northampton if Jim Mallender gets the job (I hope he doesn't as a Saints fan).

This is the truth of the matter.

The team had one, fully sanctioned by the management, night out in a six week trip and a week before their next match and yet you would have thought the way it was reported, and they way it is still repeated in online forums, they were on the p*ss every night of the whole trip.

Yes Tinds had too much to drink and, unfortunately for him, met a blonde lady who happens to be an old friend of both him and Zara who gave him a kiss on the forehead. But the tabloids didn't let the minor inconvenience of her being a family friend get in the way of a good story.

The mock outrage is even more ridiculous when it was known by the same tabloid media that two of the ABs got slaughtered 72 hours before their RWC Quarter-final but, rather remarkably, they must have forgotten to run the story.

All Blacks pair reprimanded after boozy night out

Their pious hypocrisy knows no limits.

As a non-Englishman, I only have one question.

Why is Rob Andrew still in a job?

I said this today. He is like the godfather, everyone around him is getting bumped off. Above and below him they are quiting or getting the sack. In the end he will rename himself Emperor.

Thing is what with you living ten miles up the road from me (I'm gloucester born and bred) and Tindall being a Gloucester player people will say we're simply trying to defend the actions of one of our own.
As if.... he's a former Bath (spitting smilie required) player after all

I've never quite figured out what his job supposedly is so can't really answer that one.
All I can say is that the respect I had for him as a player has pretty much eroded away

More bashing of the England team in the Times and on 5Live.

Headline " Tuilagi back in deep water on growing roll of shame" Read on and it turns out he is being fined for wearing the wrong mouth guard!

And on 5Live they referred to the lack of success of the union team and then added that was so different from our rugby league boys Err ... did I miss something but the league team got hammered by Australia two weeks ago conceding 6 tries.

You do spout some nonsense at times. England lost 36-20 in a thrilling game in which they scored 4 tries & were very unlucky with a few refereeing decisions.

playing devil's advocate that score was worse than England RU team's 19-12 "hammering" by France at RWC
-----

anyhoo I don't think cross code arguments are really that important compared to the current malaise going on at RFU

Mallinder top choice, but Saint will fight to keep him

Yep -- some astonishing results in the Heineken tonight -- Edinburgh beating Racing Metro by 48-47; Scarlets winning away at Northampton, and Cardiff continuing the 100% start by Welsh clubs with a 24-18 over London Irish. Fabulouso!

More woe for the English clubs , but the Edinburgh result in particular was amazing and they have now won both games.

Another good win for Nottingham in the Championship which is much more open this year..

Let the in fighting begin....

more interested in money, than rugby

pre-season a waste of time

I'm sure all this is helping to improve England prospects at the next RWC

I'm sure the other home nations and the southern hemisphere teams are laughing their heads off

Terrible that it's been leaked - sums up the mess at the RFU though. A number of ex players on twitter have openly accused Rob Andrew of leaking it (no doubt to take the heat off himself & a coincidence that this is just the day before Tindall's appeal )

I'm with you though Mike - England's world cup campaign was disappointing, everyone is agreed on that but time to put it to bed now. Nobody can change the 2011 world cup performance but we now need to focus and move on towards 2015. The 6 nations is in just over 2 Months - have any of the muppets at the RFU especially Rob Andrew thought of that.

There does seem to be a lot more than has been previously
reported. Not sure why we couldn't have heard this before

Because a lot of this stuff has come from the players comments to the review - which they gave in strictest confidence. This is why it's disgraceful that it's been leaked.

Some things need to be done behind closed doors.
