New Mobile Scam????
I got this e-mail from a friend, does anyone know if it's true??? Quote:
FYI
There is a new kind of mobile phone scam. A missed call will show on your mobile phone. The number is 0709 020 3840! The last four numbers may vary, but the first four numbers will remain the same! If you call this number back, you will be charged £50.00 per minute. People have complained about their phone bills, once they have realised the cost of the call but apparently this is completely legal. So beware, do not call back numbers beginning with 0709. |

Just looked the number up here is what came back :
Number 07090 203840 is potentially valid. Oftel records show that numbers starting 07090 2 are allocated to Redstone Communications Ltd. Note that due to number portability if an individual number has moved to a different operator this information is not publically available. Notes: 10 Digit Numbers. Oftel's last recorded change for this number range was in November 2000. BT charge for calls to this code at their j rate (Calls to Personal Numbering Services). It is 8.93p per minute (ex VAT), or approximately 10.5p per minute (inc VAT) Weekends. 18.72p per minute (ex VAT), or approximately 22p per minute (inc VAT) Evenings & Night-time. 27.23p per minute (ex VAT), or approximately 32p per minute (inc VAT) Daytime. Thanks.
I found this http://www.windsor-telecom.co.uk/07090numbers.htm basically it seems that these numbers are those sort of personal divert numbers. the idea being that you buy one of these numbers and give it out to people and you have the calls diverted to what ever number you are on. So i was wondering if given that they could be setup to forward to some international premium rate service??? |

I've had 3 or 4 missed calls in the last week from 07096 752xxx on my company mobile, and today had a text message from my company warning of this scam.
Not sure about the £50 charges though, but I'm not going to test it! |

I have had a text message from the number: 08712 104070 with the following message:
You have 1 new voicemail message. Please call 08712 104070 to listen to it. This came yesterday - does anybody know if this is a similar scam. I don't want to call the numer in case it charges my loads. BTW - I did phone my own voicemail to check (by pressing and holding 1) and I had no messages so I knew this is nothing to do with T-Mobile - and anyway messages from them come up with T-Mobile as the name - not just a number |

So does that mean that if I was to ring that number from my mobile, the most T-Mobile would charge is 50ppm?

From BBCi
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/3499337.stm However i've also recived texts from Orange in the last few days that say i've missed a call and the person didn't leave voicemail. It also included the number (my Dad's mobile actually) and yes he did call me and didn't leave a voicemail

This is also metioned in Birminghams Evening Mail. Its is considered true, and that you should be aware of it. Only the last 4 digits might be diferent.

I believe the highest "per minute" rate in the UK is £5/minute. which is on an 09xx number. There are no charges as high as £50 minute, even calling a satellite phone!
This is similar to the scare story last year that was even "verified" by Wiltshire police as being genuine prompting Oftel to release a statement on it. However as Oftel have now been replaced by Ofcom all the useful information has gone - otherwise I would post a link. Personally I delete any of these types of messages. If it is urgent enough then they will call back! They are becoming as bad as virus hoax messages, complete with the false verification from key organisations (others have received this email with information being "verified" by Vodafone and BT) Simon. |

The text messages from Orange are completely genuine. They are new and only advise you if someone has called while you are out of service range and they didn't leave a message. There is no charge to you.

I recognised the number as belonging to Orange, as IIRC is was a 07973100 number - would be nice if they told you of these features before they start - especially with so many scams about! |

Yes Kev you are right, it would be nice if they told you first. I have had several and have contacted Orange. It is obviously a good income for them as it means in most cases you will ring the number back. I am surprised you didn't get the call waiting tone though.

All of these messages are essentially scams!!! I'd recomend giving your details to the Telephone Preference Service - [url=http://www.tpsonline.org.uk/tpsr/html/]
It'll take 'em about 28 days, but you should see a gradual reduction in the number of marketing and scam sms. If you don't - you get to report each and every company that sends you stuff!!!!!!! |

It's not a scam. There is no premium rate of £50 pm.
However, registering with the TPS is a good idea anyway. You might also like to look at the information on the ICSTIS website on a similar subject, the £20 Per Minute Telephone 'Scam' - An Urban Myth. Here is the site - [U}http://www.icstis.org/icstis2002/default.asp?node=-1[/u] |

Rather pointless as I upgraded about 2 years ago. However, they are saying that they get your details from Orange (as far as that goes - yes, Orange has a list of number ranges that they use), and I normally have great fun getting all of their company details and then telling them that I'm registered with the TPS and that they have committed an offence in calling me. TPS is backed up by the Data Protection Laws. |

It's probably not £50pm more likely 50ppm but that does not mean that it's not a scam. The moral of the story here is if you get a missed call from an 0709 number then don't call it back. Also if you get a text saying you have an 'ARP voice mail call 0871*******' then don't call that either. By saying it's not a scam are you suggesting that people should do anything other than what i've just said? |
