Sim card slot on IPAQ h5550
Recently got on of these through work. Noticed sim card slot underneath battery. Nothing in instructions. Already has built in wifi & bluetooth connectivity, but to use as a phone with ? bluetooth headset would be great.
Any thoughts anyone?

Hi, I just googled this and found a zdnet review which said the following. Quote:
Better yet, beneath the battery is what looks like a SIM card slot, suggesting that an iPAQ/mobile phone combo may be in the works. HP avoids the question of whether there'll be such an iPAQ smartphone, but we think the SIM slot speaks volumes.
So...

This question comes up very frequently on the iPaq forums.
It is a place holder only. There is no reader underneath as there are no GSM technology in the device. HP/Compaq designed it with a SIM socket as there was a plan to introduce a version of the 5000 series with mobile phone capabilities - similar to the jacket that you can already get. It would be cheaper to have one chassis with the blanking plate than have two separate ones - similar to how a lower specification car has blanking plates over the holes for more kit on the higher spec models. However I believe this plan has now been dropped. The only difference European models have is a different language in the software. You can take a European one and put English software on to it - if you know how. Even the US ones are identical as they all come out of the same factory in Taiwan! Simon. |
